Disney's Fastpass Return Time Window Enforced

It had been tested a few months ago, but now it looks like Disney's FASTPASS is going to officially start being enforced.

According to the news that came out today, starting on March 7th, Disney will being enforcing the FASTPASS return window with a 5 minute buffer before hand and a 15 minute buffer after your FASTPASS time has expired. If you arrive anywhere outside that window, you will be denied access into the attraction.

My first and biggest thought was this is going to has have a HUGE impact on the way people are to vacation now, including myself. Before, many (yes, myself included) would obtain a FASTPASS for an attraction that we wanted to visit at some point in the day and then ride that attraction (after our FASTPASS window became available) whenever we got around to that area of the park again. It made it so we could be flexible with our vacation.

Now, however, I fear this spontaneity is going to be dead. Yes, of course, before I knew about the "loophole" that you could return at a later time, I did adhere to the FASTPASS return window. It wasn't the worst thing in the world, so I know it's something that I will be able to adhere to again. However, it was nice to know I didn't have to run halfway across the park because my FASTPASS window came up and I'd have to ride the attraction immediately.

So, while initially, it's something that I don't love...I am well aware it's not going to be the end of the world. It will be something that I will just have to revert back to the way I had been doing it for years prior to learning about the "FASTPASS secret". (The idea of using a FASTPASS well after it's return time window.)

However, this does bring me to my next worry and that is that this is supposed to be setting it up for the NextGen project, the rumored "schedule your FASTPASS from home" idea, which is something I'm totally against. It's one thing to get a FASTPASS in the park, but it's a completely other ball of wax to schedule the time, 6 months ahead of time (or whatever the beginning window will be), of when you want to ride a specific attraction. I completely respect those who are uber planners, but I am not one, nor do I think the majority of people who are traveling to Disney would be. I mean, Disney already has people who don't know how to use FASTPASS the way it is now, I can't imagine what it will be like if and when they roll out this idea. The new ideas that have been proposed under the rumored NextGen Fastpass idea are not going to be something that appeals to a lot of people in my eyes. A few select few planners will love the idea and that will be it.

Many Disney fans, are however, happy to see this change take place. I've seen a lot of talk about how this should have been done a long time ago. There are many that are hopeful about these changes, that they will make things easier for everyone...make it "fair" for everyone, including those who don't know about the loophole.

No matter whether you are for or against this change, there is one fact. It will be interesting to watch how this all impacts touring strategies in the future. Will FASTPASS be available for more attractions now later in the day? (Especially for an attraction like Toy Story Midway Mania.) Will the window get moved back in the future because of demand? Will the impact the Standby line in any way? These questions and more will, I'm sure, all be learned as time goes by.

The Liberty Belle will be closed for a refurb from April 16th - May 21st.

The Piano Pool at Disney's All Star Resort will be closed for a refurbishment from Feb. 6th - March 3rd.
Full room refurbs of Saratoga Springs should be completed by March 2013.
Full room refurbs of The Wilderness Lodge should be completed by April 2013.

General WDW News

Cape May Cafe at Disney's Beach Club will be down for a refurb from July 9th - Aug. 4th.

Rumors

It's floating around that the Kim Possible Adventure may be changing over to an Agent P Secret Mission based off of Phineas and Ferb.
It's rumored that pieces of the Storybook Circus area will soft open by the end of this month
The queue work being done at Peter Pan's Flight may not include a Next Gen queue
Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is expected to open officially on Feb. 21st.
Queues that are scheduled for for modifications are American Idol, Star Tours, Primeval Whirl, Tower of Terror, and Dinosaur. These should be completed by October.

News

Magic Kingdom

The new romance segment of The Magic, The Memories, and You will begin Feb. 1st. It will last through Mid-April. Also, this summer, a new section will debut featuring summertime fun, including things like a sandcastle.
In the Storybook Circus area, the Casey's Jr. Roundhouse will officially be known as the Casey Jr. Splash n Soak Station. It's still rumored that the area will open in late Feb. 2012. However, with the Dumbo refurb pushed back into March, the area may wait to open until then.
The Liberty Belle which was slated to have just a one week refurb, will instead have a multi-month closure, lasting until May 21st.

Downtown Disney

Basin is closed for an interior refurbishment until mid-March.
The Rainforest Cafe is getting an exterior upgrade with the work lasting until about Oct. 2012.

Rumors

Princess Merida will be doing meet and greets in the former Narnia building and she will be joined by her 3 bear friends, who will appear as puppets.
The Seas With Nemo and Friends will be receiving Fastpass when Test Track goes down for it's refurb. Once Test Track returns, the Fastpasss will be removed from The Seas.

Why You Should Stay at Disney's Pop Century Resort

Disney's Value Resorts are some of the most popular resorts on property. Of course, part of the reason is because of the price, but I also think that another reason people decide to stay at these resorts is because of the theme. As far as Disney says, these hotels are big on everything! (except price). That is especially true, given the fact that the Disney Value Resorts feature larger than life icons and bright, colorful facades.

I have now stayed at 3 of the 4 Value Hotels on property and by far, my favorite is Disney's Pop Century.

The theme that surrounds Pop Century is the celebration of the 1950s through the 1990s and all the pop culture fads that came along with those decades. This hotel focuses on the greatness of things like bowling, flower power, Rubix Cubes and yes, even the introduction of the computer into our lives.

There are quite a few reasons for this. First off...I really do love the theme. The feel of the resort is one of fun and that's exactly what makes it a prime candidate for me. I love the larger than life statues that sit out in the courtyards. To many, they are cheesy, to me, they are whimsical. They help to get across the fun and care-free atmosphere that surrounds the hotel. Which is exactly what I'm looking for in a vacation. The decor really helps to set the mood of my Disney vacation.

The next thing I love about Pop Century is their bus service. At Pop (at least as of right now) they have their own dedicated bus service to their guests. This is extremely convenient as you don't have to spend time stopping at the other resorts, putting off the time you could be spending at the theme parks. You also don't have to spend time at the end of the night when you're tired, waiting just to get back to your room, for a bus to drop guests off at the other hotels. You just hop on a bus and go and get delivered "home" a few minutes later. No muss, no fuss.

Another thing that's great about this resort is the food court. Everything Pop is one of the best at all the values for sure...maybe even resort wide. They offer so many things on the menu, not just chicken nuggets, hot dogs, and burgers. (Which, of course, can still be found here, as well.) Other unique offerings include Chicken Penne Alfredo, Pan Seared Fish, Shrimp Lo Mein, and home cooked meals like Meatloaf and Fried Chicken. There really is something for all tastes. In addition, in their bakery section, they offer their famous Tye Dyed Cheesecake. This delicious treat consists of a red velvet cake crust and and multi colored, swirled cheesecake. Just make sure to drink a glass of milk with it or you'll have dyed teeth after eating it!

In addition, I love the Everything Pop gift shop. There's just something about browsing in this shop after a long day in the parks and seeing what neat trinkets they have to offer. I can seriously spend a half hour at least after spending all day in a park here. To me, it's just an extension of the theme park day experience. My trip doesn't feel complete unless I make a stop here.

While the pools here don't feature slides, they are still exciting because they are shaped in whimsical designs. My favorite pool is the Bowling Pin Pool. It's not every day you can swim in a pool designed like a bowling pin! I love after a long day at he park, just sticking my feet in the cooling water. It's the best way to unwind after a long day.

Of course, the last reason I love to stay here are the rooms. They are just the right size for me, because usually I travel either solo or with my hubby. We don't spend a lot of time in the rooms and just being the two of us, we don't need a whole lot of space. The values are perfect in that regard. They have either a king bed (which trust me, there aren't a lot of those available at the property) or two double beds available for guests. They are outfitted in blues and greens and feature pop culture icons for the decade that you are staying in. For example, when staying in the 50s rooms, they have a picture collage up which features things like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Alice in Wonderland.

This hotel really just speaks to me and I think that's the biggest aspect that needs to go into consideration when you choose your hotel. The theme really needs to fit your sensibility.

Dining Review: Toy Story Pizza Planet

Disney's Hollywood Studios, to me, is lacking a bit in their quick service food department. The full service restaurants are a bit better, with one of my favorite restaurants in all of WDW, with 50s Prime Time Cafe being found there, but the quick service restaurants often leave a lot to be desired to us Disney fans. But, out of all the Quick Service dining locations that can be found at DHS, my favorite has to be Toy Story Pizza Planet.

Now I know many who read this blog will be like, really? Pizza Planet? That's just Disney pizza, which many believe to be not so good. For me though, Pizza Planet is one of the few places at the Studios that actually appeals to me when I want a quick meal.

Now, I'll admit, I full well know this is not going to be the top notch pizza you can get in other places around the World. (I mean, for amazing pizza, you have to make a stop over at Via Napoli), but to be perfectly honest, the Studios quick service restaurants really don't have a lot of variety to them. (Although, I will admit, in the past year, I do believe that Disney has been trying to add more variety in all the parks, with the Studios seeing a larger bump in variety than it saw previously.) The majority of the food that can be found on the Studios menus are burgers, chicken, hot dogs, fries, and some sort of salad.

I have made it very clear on the blog previously that I don't particularly care for sandwiches, nor do I like salads, so my choices at the Studios are very limited. (Although, looking at the menus, it does appear that now Fairfax Fare, which has seen their menu updated this year, does have a few things that do indeed appeal to me. I must stop there the next trip.) So for me, Pizza Planet has been the way to go.

And I do like their pizza...knowing what it is. It's not going to be the high quality stuff you can get over at Epcot, but it certainly does hit the spot. To me, the pizza is a bit better than what you may find at a Taco Bell/Pizza Hut combo and when I'm in the mood for one of their salads, it's a nice refreshing side other than fries. The pizza here is just the right size for me and the it tastes pretty good too. The cheese/sauce ratio is just about perfect for me. The only thing is, that there's just a tiny bit too much crust...but I'm not really a crust eater. (Unless I have some garlic sauce to dip it in, ala Papa Johns. Healthy...I know. ;) )

Toy Story Pizza Planet has a few different options on their menu. You can get individual Pepperoni, Cheese, or Vegetable Pizzas or you can get those same pizzas as a combo with a salad. This is just a regular mixed green salad...nothing extremely fancy. They do have some specialty salads on the menu here as well, including a chicken salad and a caprese salad. For kids meals, the choice is limited to a cheese pizza only.

The restaurant, perhaps is one I enjoy because of the nostalgia I feel for Pizza Planet. I was a young kid when Toy Story came out and I really thought Pizza Planet looked cool in the movie. Of course, this isn't exactly the same version, but they do have video games that can be played here. This is good to know for parents because it is inevitable that your child will want to play something when they visit.

Seating here is kind of minimal...at least it would appear at first glance. They do have quite a few tables outside, which are often taken up because that's what people initially see. Inside, the downstairs area features all the game options, so if you are a first timer and looking for a place to sit, it would appear that tables at this restaurant are quite limited. However, there are some stairs inside. If you take them, you will find a plethora of seating on the second level, which is often quite empty.

Toy Story Pizza Planet is a good restaurant to go to if you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle a bit. The food here is decent and while it is all pizza and salads, it at least isn't a sandwich, which for me, is a huge plus.

Magic Kingdom

Dumbo's re-opening date has been pushed back. Instead of opening on Feb. 17th, it's re-opening in Storybook Circus will take place now on March 12th.
Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom is currently doing play testing. I've heard that testing is typically occurring on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. It is rumored to be rolled out at the end of February.

Epcot

In Tutto Italia's recent refurb, a brand new wine bar is being built. The new bar will be called Gusto and will open when the resturant reopens on the new date of April 28th.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show will have a short refurb from April 29th - May 2nd.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

Mor Thiam, who has been performing near Tamu Tamu Refreshments, will have it's final performance Jan. 28th.

Rumors

Peter Pan's Flight is rumored to get it's Next Gen Queue starting around Jan. 16th - March 6th. The attraction should remain open while the work is done.
Rumors have been flying that in the near future the California Grill could be closed for a refurbishment. Some rumors are even saying that the refurb could see a whole new restaurant put in it's place. This is ONLY rumor. No real idea if there is real substance to it, but since I've heard about it a few different places, I thought I should report it.
Pixie Hollow may be returning to Epcot during the Flower and Garden Festival.

Top 5 Favorite Things About Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland is one of my all time favorite places to be in all of Walt Disney World. I don't exactly know what the calling is for me, but there's just something about it. Even with all the changes the land has seen, it just has this feel that is totally unique.

Tomorrowland, I would think, has seen the most change to it out of all the lands. With it's focus on the future, it was a place that got stale real quick, especially in the beginning. But no matter what, for me, the place still has charm.

So, I thought I'd take a look at my Top 5 Favorite things about Tomorrowland. (Which trust me, was a LOT harder than I thought! I really could have named about a million things I love about Tomorrowland!)

5. The Tomorrowland Palm Trees: Ok...this may be silly, but I love me some Tomorrowland Palm Trees. I really don't know what it is about them...but these are just so cool!

4. The Kitchiness of Space Mountain: This is an attraction that is an absolute classic. Because of that, there are some elements in here that certainly remind you that this attraction is that way. These kitchy things are what help to make Space Mountain a tradition, time and time again. Whether it's the silver plastic "play" balls that can be found if you look down in the beginning of the queue, the holographic images that can be found as you walk along, the load area, the spacemen you see along your way of blast off, the worm-hole tunnel...and that's just for starters! This attraction, really is a right of passage and it's just nostalgic enough to work for just about everyone.

3. The audio: This is a land where the music here really stands out to me. Whether it's just general background loops, the Star Tunnel music in the queue for Space Mountain, Sonny Eclipse singing a tune, or humming along to Great, Big, Beautiful Tomorrow. There's a ton of great audio in this land.
And when you hear it at home, it so easily transports you back to Disney. I think it's because it's all so distinct.
2. Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover: Ok, I'll admit, I loved this attraction a little more with the old spiel (it might have made it to number 1 if the old spiel was still in place) but no matter what spiel is stated, it is still one of the best places to relax at Walt Disney World! There is nothing better on a hot day than taking the trip on the Super Highway in the Sky! It is honestly one of the most underrated attractions at any of the parks and I love the fact that if it's not a busy day, you can pretty much take as many laps around as you need to.

1. Tomorrowland at night: There is just something so magical about this area at night. I'm sure it has to do with all the neon, but seeing this place at night transforms it into a whole other world. I love seeing all the bright colors that abound. And trust me, this place is a photographer's dream. Night photography here is so easy because there's so much that's cool about it!

Tomorrowland really is an amazing land. It is one that I love to spend a ton of time in and when I don't, I really feel cheated.

Magic Kingdom

The Magic, The Memories, and You will get a special edition makeover starting Feb. 3rd. This edition will feature a theme of romance.
The Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom is currently undergoing testing. Testing is happening periodically at the Magic Kingdom to everyone. The rumor is that it will be rolled out near the end of February.
The Plaza Ice Cream Shop is now closed through March 27th.
Dumbo is now closed in it's current location. It will be closed and re-positioned in the New Fantasyland's Circusland. The new attraction will reopen Feb. 18th.

Epcot

As I announced on my previous blog post, Test Track will see a refurbishment starting in April and lasting until Fall 2012. For more info, please read the previous post.

Rumors

The newest Pixar character, Princess Merida may be coming to the Disney Parks for a meet and greet opportunity.
Swampy the Alligator from the "Where's My Water" mobile video game, is rumored to be getting his own meet and greet. While it's unknown now where he may be meeting, it's rumored to be in the Studios.

Test Track Gets a Refurb

Today, Disney announced the Test Track refurbishment at Epcot that I'd been saying was coming for months. (Originally I reported it in the rumors section last August!) This new refurb will still include GM as the sponsor of the pavilion, but will focus on one specific car brand, Chevrolet, as the ride's core.

Disney and General Motors Renew Alliance and Create Magic for Guests at a Re-Imagined Test Track Experience

Two of the world’s most recognized brands extend an alliance that will create a new experience for millions of Guests at Epcot.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Jan. 6, 2012 – Disney and General Motors have renewed their long-term business relationship with a new multi-year corporate alliance.

As part of the new alliance, GM will be actively involved with Walt Disney Imagineering in the development of a re-imagined, design-centric Test Track experience. The refurbished Test Track will be presented by one of GM’s most famous brands, Chevrolet. As Chevrolet marks its 100^th anniversary, the new alliance agreement enables General Motors to tell its story in new and exciting ways to millions of Guests from around the world and continue as the official vehicle sponsor of Walt Disney World Resort.

“We are excited to renew our long-term alliance with General Motors,” said George Aguel, Senior Vice President, Corporate Alliances for the Walt Disney Company. “This unique agreement extends collaboration between two of the most recognized brands in the world, a relationship that spans over 30 years. The re-imagined Test Track Presented by Chevrolet will continue our shared goal of providing unique and innovative experiences that engage Disney guests in exciting and interactive ways.” ”

“As a global brand, Chevrolet is looking forward to welcoming Guests from around the world to the re-imagined Test Track,” said Joel Ewanick, Global Chief Marketing Officer for General Motors. “The best of Disney and the best of Chevrolet will come together to bring Guests an immersive experience in the design process of the vehicles they see on the road today and will see in the future.”

Plans call for closing the current GM Test Track in April 2012, with an anticipated opening of Test Track Presented by Chevrolet scheduled for fall 2012.

As part of the re-imagining, the Future World attraction will feature a sleek new “Chevrolet Design Center at Epcot” immersing Guests in the fascinating world of automotive design. Amid upbeat music, engaging media, dramatic lighting and a collection of Chevrolet concept cars and model vehicles, guests themselves will become automotive designers – and peer into the future of personal transportation in the process.

At interactive design and styling workstations, Guests will be able to create their own custom concept vehicles. The adventure will then shift into high gear as Guests buckle into their 6-person “SimCar” ride vehicle and put their design through its paces on the exhilarating hills, switchbacks and straight-aways of the Test Track circuit.

Their performance testing complete, Guests will move into a post-show area filled with special effects and be scored on how well their custom concept vehicle did. And of course, Guests will be able see the very latest Chevrolet vehicles in an all-new state-of-the-art showroom.

So what does all this mean? Well, it's all still very vague. But first of all, it means that the concept of the ride will be changing. Instead of it being a proving grounds, putting cars through their paces, you will simply be taking newly-designed vehicles for a test spin.

How will they make these changes? First, the preshow area will have to be completely redone. Hopefully this will mean that we'll stop getting the banging and clanking noise that exists here. The new Chevrolet Design Center will allow guests to use workstations to create automotive designs.

Once designed, your SimCar will go on the ride of the Test Track, allowing you to test these new concepts. There is no word if the actual Test Track attraction will change a whole lot as of yet, but it does appear that most of it may stay in tact, according to the wording of the press release. Once you get off the attraction, the post show area will have you scored on how well your concept car did.

Of course, I'm excited to see a new version of Test Track coming down the pipes. I think the attraction needed a refurb and it will be exciting to see what the next chapter of this attraction will have in store for us.

However, this does make me a little sad. I mean, one of my favorite pre-show movies will more than likely be going away... (2, 5, and 7...7?...yeah...7)...but that's just something I'll have to get over. In the long run, it will be nice to have an updated and more modern version of Test Track.

As was rumored here, this new attraction will be closing in April and will be reopening in September. (The rumored dates as of now are April 15th and Sept. 21st)

As the year progress, I can't wait to see what Disney has in store for us regarding this attraction. It has always been one of my favorites, even though many in the Disney community are not as thrilled with it as I am. It has always been one that I have stood up for, so I am anxious for more news about what's coming for sure!

General WDW News

As my previous blog posts states, Disney announced their One More Disney Day campaign. On that day, both the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland will remain open for 24 continuous hours in honor of 2012 being a Leap Year. "One More Disney Day" will take place at both from 6 am on Feb. 29th to 6 am on March 1st. No special ticketing required. Fore more info, see below, including how to enter the sweepstakes to win a trip!

Rumors

Other attractions that will be getting queues modifications look to be The Seas with Nemo and Friends, Spaceship Earth, Kali River Rapids and Expedition Everest.These could be just simple modifications or could include NextGen properties.
Talking Mickey may become permanent as early as Spring.

One More Disney Day 2012

We had announced the rumor months ago about this particular celebration and the announcement finally came in and it was exactly what we were expecting. One More Disney Day is where Disney is going to be open for 24 hours on Leap Day at both the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland. Here is the official information.

So the news has been broken! While the news of the special vacation package is new of the free night from Feb. 26th - March 10th, the 24 Hours on Leap Day is certainly not. Also new is the fact that Disney will be giving away one vacation package a day until Feb. 29th! That is certainly cool!

The Good and the Bad at Walt Disney World 2011

It's been a crazy year again for Disney fans. Lots of great things have happened. A ton of new attractions opened on both coasts, some attractions reopened after lengthy refurbs, we lost Mickey's Toontown Fair, and Disney premiered a new cruise ship in the Disney Dream and the new DVC resort in Aulani in Hawaii. Of course, this blog mostly features things that happen in Walt Disney World, so that's what we're going to take a look at today.

In honor of Betamouse's departure (one of the more sad things that happened in the Disney community this year) I am going to continue my Win, Fail, Meh ranking (lovingly borrowed from them) to see how 2011 really matched up.

Win

The Magic, The Memories, and You: A show that I think many were skeptical about, but wow...did this one really win the majority of Disney fans over. It really shows what technology can do. I love how they can update it whenever they want (like they did around the Holidays). If it doesn't leave you with a tear in your eye, I don't know what will. I can't wait to see what Disney decides to do with this in the future.
Star Tours II: I really love the update that they did for this attraction. I think it was absolutely necessary to update after all these years. While I enjoyed the old version, the new version is certainly a lot fresher. I do like that we can travel to different settings and see different characters each time. The only drawback (for me) with this attraction is that I am not a Star Wars fan and I don't know what everything I'm seeing is and who everyone is that pops up on the screen. I feel as if the old version was accessible even for those who'd never seen the movies before. Now, while I still get enjoyment out of the attraction, it doesn't feel as accessible to me.
The Enchanted Tiki Room Refurb: When the fire took place this year, speculation ran rampant, wondering if the attraction would return to it's New Management version with Zazu and Iago or if Disney would decide to re-do the attraction to a version that was similar to the original. The new attraction thankfully returned to it's original version glory (with a few tweaks). This was a welcome change as the old version was quite stale. The new version is much more "evergreen" than the previous version and is certainly more likely to stay fresher longer.
The Wild Africa Trek: This new specialty tour premiered this year to large fanfare and I believe it was a winning idea. Years ago, Disney toyed around with the idea of Night Kingdom, a specialty park where guests could do things like zip-lining and come in contact with animals. That idea ended up dying, however, Disney did what they do best and took the pieces of that concept and include it in the Wild Africa Trek, a brilliant idea in my mind. While there's no zip-lining, guests do get to learn a lot about the animals along the way and in addition get close to hippos and crocodiles in an experience like no other.
New Unique Dining Choices: This year, we saw Disney attempt to upgrade some of their quick service dining locations food offerings. We saw things like the macaroni and cheese hot dog, the nutella and fruit waffle sanwich, the lobster roll, and specialty angus burgers. It's really nice to have different offerings than just plan old regular versions of burgers, chicken fingers and hot dogs. So, while most are still theme park food staples, Disney has really taken them to the next level by trying to make the options a little more unique and for that, I salute them.
FASTPASS for Mickey: This is something that I can't believe they didn't do years before. It was a brilliant idea to include FASTPASS to meet Mickey!

Fail

Pixar Pals Parade: Does any even remember that this debuted this year? I didn't until I looked back through the year. While the parade included different characters that hadn't been seen in a parade before, this parade is a poor excuse for a parade. The floats are cheesy and the music is grating.
Let the Memories Begin Campaign: It started out pretty decent with the introduction of the Magic, The Memories, and You and then it just DIED quickly into the year. If you're going to have an ad campaign for the year, make it be something that will last a little longer than 3 months. I want to be able to celebrate with you when I take my trips at the end of the year! :)

Meh

Mickey's Toontown Fair's Closure: This year we said goodbye to Mickey's Toontown Fair. We all knew it was coming, but early in the year, the temporary land finally was removed for good. While I have good memories of Mickey's Birthdayland (the original version), this land and what it eventually became never really had it's hooks in me. Couple that with the fact that it's going to make way for Circusland for the brand new Fantasyland, well, I am ok with it leaving. It's not a big deal in my book.
Avatarland Announcement: This year, Disney announced that James Cameron would be teaming up with the Imagineers to build Avatarland at Disney's Animal Kingdom. At first my initial thought was to put this in the Fail category. It's not something that I'm looking forward to and I think it could be a mistake on Disney's part to build an entire land based off a movie franchise that certainly hasn't proven itself nor does it have rabid followers. However, I decided to include this in the Meh category simply because I want to see what Disney decides to do. There isn't any news that's come out about what's headed into this land, so I'm in the wait and see category on this one currently.
The closure of Journey Into Narnia: It's hard to believe this attraction was still open up until this year. The movies didn't do as well as Disney had expected and the last movie wasn't even made by Disney. This is one attraction where I think no one cared to see it go. So goodbye Narnia...we won't be missing you.
DVC at the Grand Floridian Announced: I can't get excited about this new DVC announcement because I don't really enjoy the Grand Floridian. I feel as if it is a stuffy-ish resort and one that I just don't belong in. Therefore, DVC being built at the Grand Floridan, while it's a nice thing, it isn't going to make me buy into DVC.
New Haunted Mansion Queue: The Haunted Mansion debuted it's new NextGen Queue and in my eyes...it was just ok. It's got some neat elements to it, but overall, it just feels really kiddie, which to me, is the exact opposite of what the Haunted Mansion is trying to portray inside. Yes, the Haunted Mansion isn't supposed to be super scary, it's lighthearted scary fun, but the queue, to me, doesn't portray that in the most effective way. It feels way more dumbed down and cartoon-y than it should and I dislike that.

So these are just some of the more major events that happened this year at the Walt Disney World Resort. Of course, there are some that I'm sure I missed and that's where you come in, make sure to let me know in the comments if you agree or disagree with where I've placed the year's happenings on my list and also if there's something that you think I should have added.

As far as 2012 is concerened, it looks like it's going to be a really exciting year. We've got the Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom debuting, parts of the New Fantasyland opening, plus the new Disney's Art of Animation Resort will finally come to light after years of being shuttered as the second phase of the Pop Century Resort. 2012 looks to be a really exciting year to be a Disney fan for sure!

Magic Kingdom

The full menu has returned to the Golden Oak Outpost in Frontierland.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

From now until Dec. 31st, Disney will be running Animated Shorts at the Premiere Theater at the Streets of America. Showtimes run from 11 am - 8 pm.

Resort News

The Samawati Springs Pool Slide at Kidani Village will be closed from Jan. 9th - Feb. 3rd. The rest of the pool will remain open.

General WDW News

A new race has been announced! The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10 Miler Weekend will take place the weekend of Sept. 29th. This is the first 10 mile race. In addition, it will be another nighttime race and will host an after party for you as well as family and friends. To make way for this race, the Wine and Dine Half Marathon has been moved to Nov. 9th and 10th, which will be the final weekend of the Epcot Food and Wine Festival.
A new teaser page has been introduced for the 2012 Campaign called the Year of More Magic. The new campaign's full details will be announced on Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin Eve. For the teaser page, visit http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/one-more-disney-day/ Strong rumors are indicating that it may culminate in an extra 24 Hour long day on Feb. 29th, for Leap Day, while I've seen others not so strongly indicate that it may be another year of sharing memories on the Disney Parks website. (Like last year's Let the Memories Begin.) Maybe it's a combination of both! We'll find out soon for sure!

Rumors

Four new attractions may be slated for NextGen work at Disney's Hollywood Studios. These could include Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Toy Story Midway Mania, the Fantasmic Amphitheater, and the Theater of the Stars (where Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage is performed.
The latest rumor I've seen about Test Track is that the refurbishment will last from April to September and that it's new sponsor will be Chevrolet.

The Best at Downtown Disney

Downtown Disney and I have had an interesting relationship. I loved it for years when Pleasure Island was open and my beloved Adventurer's Club was there (yes, I'm still sad...I know it's gone, but I can still be sad about it!) but for years after Pleasure Island closed, I didn't see a reason to trek back to Downtown Disney. There just wasn't a whole lot that was calling my name.

I mean, sure you had interesting shopping, however, at the time, a lot of what was found in the stores in Downtown Disney were things that I could find in other stores at the parks. Not a reason to make a whole trip over to this area. Another problem for me was a majority of the Westside. It felt like a giant mall, with things that really weren't too terribly unique.

A lot of that has changed over the past few years. Disney has made great strides to add stores and restaurants that help to make Downtown Disney stand out a bit more. Sure, there are still some things that don't interest me, however, there really are a lot of things now at Downtown Disney that make it a must stop for me on my trips, as of lately.

So, I thought I'd share with you the things that I think are standouts at Downtown Disney. These are things that you certainly shouldn't miss, if you have been, on your next trip.

First things first, we are going to talk about World of Disney. Yes, this is the biggest Disney store in the world! And it does house some great fun. I can spend forever in here browsing, seeing what thing I can't live without. It is always just a nice trip, even if I don't buy anything. (Keep in mind, it always seems to be TERRIBLY crowded, no matter what time of day you go. So just be prepared.)

Another place on my MUST DO list is Goofy's Candy Co. This place offers the ability to make your own pretzels or candy apples, but what I go here for are the things in the cases. They have so many delectable items like candies and fudge, but my favorite is what is known (to me) as the Heavy Cookie. Yes, you can find these huge cookies at a few other places on Disney property, but there is something about taking the trip over to Goofy's to buy it there. These are one of my most favorite treat in all of Walt Disney World and I often bring them home as souvenirs for both me and my family!

Around the holiday season, you will catch me making a stop over at the Earl of Sandwich. Here they have the Holiday Sandwich, which consists of turkey, stuffing, gravy, mayo, and cranberries. Seriously...this thing is good! There's a reason why when the store starts selling it the line gets bigger than it usually is! It is one of those treats that I only get at Disney, which makes it a must stop any time around the holidays when they are serving this sandwich. Of course, their other sandwiches are perfectly fabulous too! Really, Earl of Sandwich is the perfect lunch stop.

If you're still hungry...try taking a trip over to Raglan Road. At first I was a little hesitant to try this restaurant. I am a picky eater and the food options originally scared me. That all changed after I actually ate here. This restaurant has started my love of Irish food! It also has great entertainment available most nights. I strongly suggest if you are hungry one night to see if they have any availability. It will be worth it.

Still hungry? (Can you tell I really like to eat?!) Head on over to my all time new love...Babycakes NYC. I was a lot hesitant eating here at first, being the fact that it's a vegan bakery, but my good friend Jay had been raving about the place for months, so I knew I had to try it. I got the chocolate chip cookie sandwich and OH MY GOD! I have never had anything more delicious that was vegan in my life. I have dreams about this cookie and I am counting down the days until I can eat it again. Babycakes also has cupcakes, breads, and other delectable that you certainly need to try.

The last thing on my list as something you need to try (it's not food, I promise!) is the Characters in Flight Balloon on the Westside. I got to experience this in October and it's a really neat thing. The balloon gives you views that are only available on property through it. I wished it would have lasted a bit longer, but otherwise it was a very cool and entertaining activity to do on a day when I was not visiting the parks.

Winnie the Pooh meet and greet has moved to to Town Square.
The Main Street Electrical Parade will not run from Jan. 20th - Feb. 10th.
The Diamond Horseshoe will be open for holiday crowds offering a counter service lunch. The restaurant will be open 11 am to 3 pm from December 17th to December 31th.
The Plaza Ice Cream Parlor will be closed Jan. 4th - March 27th.

General WDW News

Disney has expanded it's complimentary WiFi in many public areas. Areas that are included: Porte Cochere, Main Lobby, Bus stops, Guest rooms, Feature Pool

Magic Kingdom

The Magic Carpets of Aladdin will be down for refurbishment from Feb. 26th - March 10th.
While it was known that Dumbo would be open in February, it appears that Disney is planning to open the entire Circusland, including The Great Goofini and the new Fantasyland train station.

Epcot

Katsura Grill in Japan has finally opened. The quick service restaurant offers much of it's old dishes in addition to a few new items like a panko-breaded chicken sandwich and a cold ramen noodle dish with shredded crab stick in a sweet soy dressing.
The RFID entry system has been removed.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

The Backlot Tour will be closed from Feb.13th - March 10th.
Honey I Shrunk the Kids Playset will be closed from Feb. 13th - March 10th.
The Comedy Warehouse will be back for a limited engagement at the Sounds Dangerous Theater from Dec. 25th - Dec. 31st. The Comedy Warehouse Holiday Special will present the best in improvisational comedy. Show times (subject to change) are 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 4:45 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. daily.

General WDW News

2012 will be known as the Year of More Magic. According to Disney in their information: From exciting seasonal events and brand-new attractions to immersive new experiences and a special surprise announcement on New Year's Eve…there's a lot more than just Leap Year to celebrate throughout Walt Disney World® Resort in 2012. Rumors are circulating that this could mean that the Magic Kingdom will be open for 24 hours on Feb. 29th.
Disney has confirmed that DVC is being built at the Grand Floridian.

Rumors

There's a possibility that SpectroMagic could return in October 2012.
In additional parade news, it is rumored that the Magic Kingdom may see a new parade in 2012.
Avatar may end up opening a little early in 2015.
Frontierland will be getting repaved in February, which will result in the Disney Electrical Parade being down.

Magic Kingdom

Golden Oak Outpost's menu has changed again, only offering hot dogs, chips, cakes, and drinks.
The Plaza Ice Cream Parlor will be closed for a refurb from Jan. 9th - Feb. 17th.
The Nights of Joy has announced an early schedule of their line up. The event will take place Sept. 7th and 8th. On Friday, performers include Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin, needtobreathe, Red, Francesca Battistelli, Brandon Heath, Royal Tailor, Disciple and on Saturday, MercyMe, Third Day, Kutless, Chris August, Lecrae and Thousand Foot Krutch.

Epcot

The House of Innovention will be closed for refurbishment to make way for the VISION House. When it reopens, cast members will lead guests through the house for a guided tour featuring building science fundamentals, integrated design elements, green products, and intelligent systems that enhance the home’s sustainability. Then, guests will be directed into a post-show area, which will contain interactive kiosks that contain further information about sustainable living. It is expected to open in Mid 2012, with the rumored date of May.
Chita Rivera has been added as the last Celebrity Narrator for Candlelight Processional on Dec. 16th - 18th.
The Yakitori House is now expected to be closed through Dec. 16th.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Star Wars Weekends have been announced. For 2012, those dates are: May 18th - 20th, May 25th -27th, June 1st-3rd and June 8th-10th.
A new limited time Quick Service Fantasmic Dining Package is now available. The new package is called A Taste of Hollywood--A Fantasmic Dining Experience and offers an affordable picnic plus reserved seating for Fantasmic. The pick of up the meals is at Min and Bill's Dockside Diner starting at 11 am to 1 and a half hours before your selected showtime. Guests can pick up their meal at their convenience. Guests may pre-order by calling 407-WDW-DINE. This is only being offered right now from Dec. 18th - Dec. 31st. Meals include

Fried chicken with maple-glazed sweet potato and baby spinach salad, broccoli and cranberry salad and cheesecake ($14.99)
Veggie wrap with avocado spread, tabbouleh, avocado and tomato salad with citrus vinaigrette and chocolate cake ($14.99)
Olive oil poached salmon with couscous salad with dried cranberries and peas, roasted beet and apple salad and Key lime pie ($14.99)

Disney's Animal Kingdom

Characters from Up will be doing meet and greets soon.
Kali River Rapids will be closed for refurbishment from Jan. 23rd - Feb. 9th.

General WDW News

Disney Quest is offering a New Year's Eve event again. From 8 pm - 1 am, guests who attend will be entertained with a DJ and dance party and unlimited access to all the games. At Midnight, there will be a confetti drop. In addition, party goers will receive a coupon for a meal and drink. The cost is $45 in advance or $55 at the door per person.
ESPN Wide World of Sports will see an expansion of 25 acres. Improvements will include upgraded playing fields, enhanced lighting, a brand new audio system and also video displays.
The Health and Wellness Suites at the Contemporary have indeed been canceled. The Suites and the Concierge Lounge on the 14th floor will be refurbished.
The Pepper Market at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort will be testing a new buffet option for both breakfast and lunch from now until January 4th. Prices will be $14.99 for adults and $8.99 for kids for breakfast and $16.99 for adults and $9.99 for kids for lunch.
At the Polynesian, a beach re-nourishment from Jan. 4th - Jan. 17th. The beach will remain open during this time.
Trail's End has introduced a new baked potato bar with their dinner buffet.
Walgreens appears to be the first tenant of the Flamingo Crossing shopping area.

Rumors

Hearing that soft openings for Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom could happen as soon as Christmas week for guests. (Of course, this is PURELY rumor!)
The rumor that Angel may be replacing Lilo at Animal Kingdom soon has cropped up again.

They're Going To Disney World? (And You're Not)

If you've been in the Disney community long enough, you start to gain friends whom mean everything to you. These friends are just like your friends in your real life, you talk to them all the time, you have fun when you get to seem them and hang out...only one small problem...they usually don't live in the same place as you. Your only times to see each other are often at Disney World. (Or Disneyland.)

But what happens when your friends all get to get together and you don't? We've all been there. A great meet up of your friends and you just can't make it because of one reason or another.

Right now, this is currently happening to me. Some of my bestest Disney friends are all gathering down in Florida and I'm stuck here, in New Mexico, with snow looming on the horizon. (Yep...apparently it snows here in New Mexico...I did not sign up for snow!)

So how do you cope with being away from your friends, knowing they are having a blast and you are stuck at home? (Besides cursing the fact that you STILL don't live in Florida.)

By following along with their trip of course.

In this day and age of smart phones where almost everyone seems to have one, it's so much easier to stay in touch with your friends and feel like you can be a tiny part of the trip, without actually being there. You can follow along with the antics on Twitter or Facebook. It's great because they can share where they're at, share their fun photos. You can also text or even FaceTime them. I like the FaceTime option because you can see them. My personal new favorite though is the iPhone app HeyTell, which is like walkie talkie, so you're talking in real time. I've gotten to ride many attraction with my friends because of this app. So it really is like I'm there with them!

So, while I'm super sad that I can't be in Florida with all the fun that's happening starting now and lasting for the next few weeks...because of technology, I don't feel like I'm missing out AS much as I may have used to. And that's a comfort in itself.

Could Avatar-land be built at Rafiki's Planet Watch? That's what some rumors indicate this week.
Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom should be testing starting in Adventureland toward the middle or end of the first quarter of 2012.

As you all know by now, I have a deep admiration for the Port Orleans Riverside resort. From seeing the boats roll across the Sassagoula River, to the horses clip clopping along the sidewalk, Port Orleans Riverside will always be near and dear to my heart.

In 2008 though, that admiration heightened tremendously for me. A couple years before that, my brother came back to our room at Riverside one night and said "That piano guy is playing down at the bar. He was playing Piano Man." 2008 was the year I finally got to hear what my brother was talking about and an instant staple was born in my future trips to Walt Disney World.

"Yehaa" Bob Jackson plays every Wednesday through Saturday night in the River Roost Lounge of the Port Orleans Riverside resort. I would tell you how to get there from the Port Orleans Riverside food court, but on the nights that he plays, just follow his voice once you walk in the doors of the food court and you'll know where he is.

Not only is it the music that is special to me, but just the atmosphere is something I can't describe. When you go up to the bar, they treat you like you never left. After a long day in the Disney parks, it's almost like you're home. Plus, you have one waitress who dances or sings to every song Bob plays. You can actually see in their faces that they love their job.

I think that's what makes Disney World such a magical place. You don't have to go into a park to see the happiness people have for what they do. I think just being on the grounds is enough to know that something special is in the air at Walt Disney World.

Now, based on how special we think Bob is, whenever we plan our Disney World vacation, we always make sure that Bob will be there. It's interesting to me. Most of the time when you drive up to the gates of Riverside, they tell you "Welcome Home." Being in the River Roost Lounge Wednesday through Saturday nights, I finally know what that means.

Magic Kingdom

Sleepy Hollow Snacks is now offering Waffle Sandwiches. There are 3 different versions: a sweet and spicy chicken, a ham, prosciutto, and swiss, and a Nutella and fresh fruit.
The Diamond Horseshoe will be open for Thanksgiving week. It will be open as a counter service location for lunch on Nov. 20th - 23rd and 25th and 26th. Hours will be from 11 am - 3 pm. It will then be open as a table service location on Nov. 20th - 23rd from 5 pm - 9 pm. On Nov. 24th, it will be open all day as a table service location.
The Move It Shake It Celebrate It Parade has been remodeled. Now Timon and Terk have joined in the fun.

Epcot

The Yakitori House's refurb has been extended to Dec. 16th.
2012 International Flower and Garden Festival's front topiary will be featured around Sorcerer Mickey and other pieces from Fantasia. The event will take place March 7th - May 20th.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Starting Nov. 25th, American Idol Experience will offer Christmas songs for guests to be able to perform.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

Some special events will be taking place next week for Thanksgiving. From Nov. 20th - 26th, aDJ dance party will be playing in Asia near Yak and Yeti. In addition, the Harambe Village Band will be playing in Africa.

The Mouse-standing List: Days To Go WDW App (And Giveaway!)

Ever since I got my iPhone back in June, I've been trying to find out about all the cool apps that are offered both Disney and Non-Disney. It's been a fun project for sure!

In my quest to find interesting apps, I was told about one such Disney app from a listener of the show. This app is called Days To Go WDW and was created by Joe Fratianni. The app's main feature is to keep a countdown of how many days until your next WDW Trip. It's been fabulous as I've been counting down to the BOGP Cruise 2.0.

The great thing about this app is that you can customize it to fit your needs. Not only can you countdown the number of days left til your trip, but you can also include your own photos in your countdown. (As you can see above with my photo of Chip on the Dream acting a little "nutty".

You can also customize the app. So, don't like the color for the borders? No problem, you can change them. Want to change the font? Guess what, you can do that too! You can even add your own music to play!

The app also has Facebook integration which posts your countdown on your wall, showing the number of days left until your trip!

You can even set reminders for yourself! Mine tells me every day at 4:00 pm how many days are left until my trip!

This app offers so much to it, that you really have to play with it to figure out what suits your needs best! You can make it what you want it to be!

The app can be purchased via iTunes and it's compatible with iPhones, iPod touch, and iPads.

So because I liked the app so much, I thought I'd interview the author of the app, Joe to find out a little more about the app in general as well as more information about his passion for Disney!

Me: Tell me a little about yourself

Joe: I love just about everything Disney creates, but have a special affinity for WDW. My other love is all things Apple.

What is your project about?

I love Disney. I love creating iPhone apps. What could be better than combining the two? I created an iPhone app, Days to go WDW which allows a user to "Count the Days until your next WDW Vacation, with style."

Where you did you get your inspiration for it?

My hairdresser told me her daughter would like an app to count the number of days to a special event, like her next Disney Trip.

What makes your project different from others like it?

I love creating apps I want to use. I also try to integrate every idea or suggestion from users, but maintain Apple's philosophy of simplicity on the surface, but functionality underneath. I think it makes a big difference when an app is made by someone with a passion for the subject.

How long did this project take?

Although it never will be done, I've spent about 300 hours over countless months so far. I like to think of my apps like Walt Disney World: Always in a state of becoming. Never quite finished.

What was something that you learned from creating this project?

- Simplicity is very difficult and complex to implement.
- The time between two dates are computed in seconds
- Not all days have 24 hours
- I take thousands of pictures at WDW, but very few are any good
- Pictures take up huge amounts of memory, of which iPhones have very little.

What was the most challenging thing when creating the project?

Programming is like building a house. There are numerous parts and skills needed to put together a quality app. You need to become a jack of all trades. There is rough carpentry which no-one will see, but it is no less important than the finish work. A shortcut taken along the way sticks out in the finished product.
One of the most frustrating things programming is running into a dead end. A problem that you do not understand and cannot figure out. It tends to occur when thinks are progressing well. A great example is when I was asked to add font color choices to an app. Seemed very simple, but took a week and about 30 hours to implement. I found that sheer persistence works - eventually.

What got you started on your Disney obsession?

My obsession has existed as long as I can remember, but remember a family trip my wife and I took with our two kids and her parents in 2001 that really seemed to kick my obsession into high gear. I grew up going to Disney once in a while, but never staying on property. I recall staying on Disney property was never even a consideration - it was something only royalty could afford. Then during the summer of 2001 we saw an advertisement for Disney Value Resorts: $49 per night! I had some concerns. I wasn't sure what a Value Resort would be like. How bad could it be? They must have running water and flush toilets. We should give it a try. That was a big jump in Disney obsessive - compulsive disorder. I became fascinated with how Disney categorized resorts into Value, Moderate and Deluxe, and how they differentiated them. Things spiraled downhill from there.

What's your favorite Disney memory?

A father / son trip to the World in 2008. What a blast. To this day we can relive the fun of the trip just by naming an attraction. We add some dramatic flare and say "Expedition Everest" or "Toy Story Midway Mania" for example. We still call each other Disney Buddies.

What is your favorite park?

EPCOT

What's your favorite attraction?

Soarin. Fun for all ages, doesn't leave anyone out.

What's your favorite restaurant?

Crystal palace. Food, not so memorable. Pictures of the kids with Pooh, Tiger and Piglet? Unforgettable.

Do you plan on creating another project in the future? If so, what?

Working on a fun Disney app for Tony Calselnova: Disney by the Numbers.

The Disney community is such a cool group. I find it so wild how everyone expresses their Disney Passion in his or her own way. Some people blog, some make podcasts, write books and so on. I am not a blogger, a podcaster or writer. I love expressing my passion in my own geeky way.

Magic Kingdom

The Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom is currently seeing play testing from Cast Members.
The Enchanted Grove in Fantasyland has now been renamed the Cheshire Cafe.

Epcot

Joyful! A Gospel Celebration of the Season will return again for the Holidays. They will perform on the Fountain of Nations Stage from Nov. 25th - Dec. 29th. Performances are at 1:15 pm, 2:15 pm, 3:15 pm, and 4:15 pm.
An RFID entry system is being tested at the main gate. This new RFID system will allow for guests not to have to enter their tickets into the machine, instead just waving their ticket in front of the reader. Should the test succeed, it seems that it will be rolled out to all turnstiles at WDW.
I've heard that the pizza by the slice option will be continuing at Via Napoli on Saturdays until Dec. 17th.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Jake from The Neverland Pirates has indeed replace The Little Einsteins for Meet and Greets in the Animation Courtyard. Also Jake should be included in the Play and Dine at Hollywood and Vine.

General WDW News

More information has come out about the new Exotic Driving Experience from the Walt Disney World Speedway. The opening date is set for Jan. 16th. The price will be $99 for a ride with a professional driver and starting at $199 up to $389 for 6 laps of hands on driving. (Price varies depending on the car.)
The Sunglass Icon store has been remodeled and has reopened at Downtown Disney.

Rumors

Disney's Animal Kingdom is rumored to be losing quite a few characters in December. Lilo and Stitch, Terk, Jimminy Cricket, and Pocahontas are going away. In addition, the Welcome Show will be going away as well.
Big changes appear to be coming to the Move It! Shake It! Celebrate It! Parade as early as Nov. 20th.

Phineas and Ferb will be among the characters meeting guests at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. They are expected to meet in Tomorrowland.
The Frontierland Shootin Arcade has finally reopened after it's lengthy refurb.
Liberty Square Riverboat will be closed from Nov. 9th - 11th.
Swiss Family Treehouse will be closed a few additional days, with it's reopening date of Nov. 21st.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

There will be no Osborne Lights on Dec. 8th.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

AP holders are eligible to get a complementary 2012 calendar starting Dec. 2nd. You may pick them up at Disney's Outfitters.

The World Series of WDW: Disney's Hollywood Studios/Disney's Animal Kingdom

A week ago, I started this series of looking at which attractions I believed to be home runs, walks, strikeouts, triples, etc. at the Magic Kingdom and Epcot. This week, I will finish the series by taking a look at Disney's Hollywood Studios and Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Home Run

Toy Story Midway Mania: Such a knock out attraction. It has the repeatability with the fact that it's a game and it can change at the drop of a hat whenever Disney wants to update it. This ride also is great for all members of the family. It's just really been a great addition to the Studios since it was added.
Tower of Terror: This is one of those that has that Disney theming down to a T. You can't get much better with theme than this attraction. Plus it has the thrill factor included. It's one of those attractions that I wish didn't make me so sick, because I absolutely love it otherwise.

Triple

Rock n' Roller Coaster: Yes, this is a really novel idea. Take a regular inverted roller coaster and put it in the dark. But what makes this a triple rather than a home run for me is that A) it's kinda short feeling and B) while some of the sets are extremely well done, some are just cardboard and you can tell. Plus, many would say that Aerosmith is past it's prime, though personally, I can't think of another band that would be applicable to put in it's place. But maybe you can. If you have an idea of who you think would like to see, let me know in the comments.
The Great Movie Ride: This one really is a classic Disney's Hollywood Studios attraction. It's an original and it's a novel concept of taking a trip through the movies. The thing that makes this a triple is the fact that it hasn't really been updated since it opened. It could use a refurb of new classic movies. The problem that I see (which I mentioned on a recent episode of Generation Mouse all about this topic) is that there really aren't that many great classic movies from the past 20 years. If you can think of one, (that isn't Pirates) please include that in the comments section too!

Double

Muppetvision 3D: It's a little dated looking, but it's certainly worth a visit. It's not a headliner anymore, but it's consistently funny and since they digitally restored the film, you can see things a lot better. It'll be interesting though to see what happens with this film once The Muppets comes out in theaters this month and we see what kind of response this new film gets.
Star Tours: Yes, it's a lot better now that it's seen it's refurb in regards to technology. It's really neat that you can see a different attraction essentially everytime you visit. However, because I haven't seen the movies, I don't understand what everything is and who everyone is. With the old one, I felt like you didn't have to be a Star Wars fan to understand it. With this new version, I feel as if you really have to be a Star Wars fan to know what's going on.

Single

Voyage of the Little Mermaid: While this isn't an original attraction, it's one that I have to see every few trips. Yes, it could benefit from a freshening up, particularly since they recently created the Broadway version, but to me, it's one of the more classic Disney's Hollywood Studios.
Fantasmic!: I know that to many, this is an amazing show. It's got fire and water screens and it's all about good VS evil. However, for me, this is a see it once, you don't need to see it for a long while after. It just doesn't have the epicness as Illuminations or Wishes has.

Walk (The Meh Category)

Beauty and The Beast--Live on Stage: I loved Beauty and the Beast, but for this attraction, for some reason, it just doesn't have the spark that it should. It feels as if a lot is missing, much like Voyage does, and the fact that there are no comfortable seats and the theater is outdoors, it doesn't draw me in.

Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular: This one is relatively cool, in terms of stunt shows at the Studios. This one certainly takes the cake in comparison, however, the thing that puts this as a walk is the fact that you can see it once and have that be enough. It hasn't changed, well, ever. If this attraction saw an update with some new stunts added, I think it would move up the list a bit more.

Strikeout

Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show: This has to be the most boring stunt show I've ever seen. Yes, it has potential to be great. It has really awesome stunts that are performed. However, that's when they're actually performed. Most of the time when watching this show, you are watching downtime. Certainly not exciting when you are there for a stunt show.
Studios Backlot Tour: I don't think I'll get much argument here. Yes, it's one of the original attractions, however, this one has certainly fared worse than it's other sister attraction (GMR). It has been cut to a former shell of itself. And while there is the cool Catastrophe Canyon still there...well...that's really it. That's all there is that's left of any merit to this attraction. So, Disney, kill it off. It's past it's prime and it's valuable space that's just doing nothing.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

(Disclaimer: Because this park has very few attractions, I will only be picking 1 attraction for each category.)

Home Run

Kilimanjaro Safaris: This one is hard, but I think that Kilimanjaro Safaris gets the top spot here. It's really neat to get to see some amazing creatures up close and personal. While the story is a tad weak, the animals you get to see make up for it.

Triple

Finding Nemo--The Musical: This is one of my favorite shows in all 4 theme parks. It has great music and the puppetry here is amazing. It really is can't miss, even if you don't like shows.

Double

Expedition Everest: I bet you're surprised to see this so far down on my list. I am too...but when comparing it to the other attractions, it doesn't hold up as well. The coaster itself is spectacular. I really enjoy the theme and it certainly keeps you in suspense. My biggest problem...the Yeti. Much like many others in the Disney community, I want to see this attraction fixed back to it's former glory. The original Yeti was SO cool! Now, a shell of it's former self, it doesn't pack the same punch that it originally did. That's why it's only a double on my list. Disney, please, I know you don't want to, but you need to close this attraction for the time it will take to fix this attraction to at least a little better than it is. It's just a shame it has lasted in it's poor condition for as long as it has.

Single

Festival of the Lion King: It's got great music and extremely talent singers. How can you go wrong? But it's not something I have to do all the time. It doesn't have the appeal to me that Finding Nemo does.

Walk

Maharajah Jungle Trek: This is the better of the two, but because I hail from St. Louis, which has one of the most amazing zoos in the country, this attraction just feels like it should be in our zoo. So, while I enjoy it, it's certainly not something that stands out.

Strikeout

Primeval Whirl: While I am one who understands what they are doing with Dinoland USA here, this attraction is one that I question it's reason for being in the park still. It has not had a very welcome existence, plus it's been a troublesome ride for Disney this past year. Not to mention the cheese factor which many think is a slap in the fact to Walt Disney's legacy of his theme parks. It just seems like it's welcome is more than over.

Magic Kingdom

Cosmic Ray's menu board is now digital.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh's queue is slated to have a refurbishment. The interactive queue will be closed from Nov. 2nd - 9th. The FASTPASS line will be the temporary only entrance and FASTPASS will be discontinued at this time.
Talking Mickey is set to be on Main Street meeting guests at the Town Square Theater as a test.

General WDW News

An all new track driving experience is coming to the Richard Petty Raceway. This un-named (as of now) exotic car experience is expected to have lap time, in-car video, souvenir photos, and branded apparel. Cars guests are expected to be participating are Ferrari F430 Scuderia, Lamborghini Gallardo LP560, Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, Audi R8, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Porsche 911 GTR3

Rumors

Snow White's Scary Adventure is rumored to be closed for good sometime in February.
I'm hearing that Jake from Jake and the Neverland Pirates may be making appearance as DHS as soon as Nov. 13th.
Once the new Fantasyland opens, I've heard that the Beauty and the Beast show at DHS will be replaced with a Tangled show.
Also hearing that once the new Fantasyland opens, the Voyage of the Little Mermaid will be closed for a Phineas and Ferb live show.

The World Series of WDW: Magic Kingdom/Epcot

With tonight being the World Series Game 7, I saw a post on the BOGP message boards about which attractions do you think are home runs, triples, doubles, etc. I thought I'd take a look at what I really think fits these categories.

Magic Kingdom

Home Run

Haunted Mansion: Does it get much better than this? This attraction is top notch 100% Disney Magic. Great gags, amazing AAs, great "story", this attraction has it all!
Pirates of the Carribbean: Much like my description of the Haunted Mansion, this attraction too has everything to make it have it all. If you don't get off this and love it, you aren't a Disney fan.

Triple

Space Mountain: Ok, yes, this is a favorite of mine, but I mean, even after the refurb, there are still some things that could use some tweaking. It's a nice touch that they added some audio to go along with the attraction, but it would have been great to see audio added on the ride vehicle itself. It also would have been nice to see Disney have completely re-done the track and made it so that we could have side by side vehicles, instead of front to back.
Peter Pan: Another fan favorite, but this attraction is certainly one that could use a few tweaks. It's definitely kitchy though, which is why it's a triple for me.

Double

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: It's a good roller coaster, but it's also one that I don't have to do time and time again. Matter of fact, there have been trips where I've totally missed this attraction. However, whenever I get on it, I have the time of my life and remember just how fun the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness truly is!
The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh: It's a fun attraction, no doubt. I definitely enjoy the creativity and the whimsy of this attraction. But it doesn't quite hold up to some of the other attractions in Fantasyland to me, which is why it's only a double.

Single

Buzz Lightyear: Yes, this was a cool attraction at one point. It was one of my favorites for sure. But with the addition of Toy Story Midway Mania, this attraction has lost some of it's luster. It's not nearly as easy to play as it's Disneyland counterpart and it certainly looks dated now. (I may be bitter because I suck at it...I can never get good scores here.)
Monster's Inc Laugh Floor: This is one that I don't have to do every trip, but do enjoy when I visit. It's a very fun, whimsical attraction which, yes, can be pretty scripted, but also has those moments of improv. This is an attraction that has fun written all over it.

Walk (The Meh Category)

The Enchanted Tiki Room: Yes, I just saw this in October. (October 1st to be exact). I remembered it fondly as a child. But after finally seeing it where I can remember it completely, I wasn't blown away by it. It's one of those attractions that I'll go visit occasionally, yes, but it's not one that I absolutely LOVED.
Tomorrowland Speedway: I see the appeal for this attraction. It gives the kiddos a way to drive a car, which is a cool thing to do when you're a kid. But it's an attraction that takes up a lot of space and also not one that is truly spectacular, so for me, it's a walk.

Strikeout

Stitch's Great Escape: Ok...so this is a give-in. This attraction is not one that I particularly enjoy nor do many other people. Definitely makes it to the Strikeout category because of it's non-wide appeal.
The Magic Carpets of Aladdin: Another sort of give-in. With the Dueling Dumbos coming in the new Fantasyland, the appeal for having the Magic Carpets sort of goes away, doesn't it? I mean the point of bringing in the Magic Carpets IS because so many kids wanted to ride Dumbo, but it's capacity was small. So, maybe with the doubling of the Dumbo capacity, we'll see The Magic Carpets go away.

Epcot

Home Run

Soarin: Disney really hit it out of the park with this one because it's an attraction that even the most scared can enjoy.
American Adventure: This is also classic Disney. It has such amazing AudioAnamatronics, a great story, and it's touching. This show makes you proud to be an American. Does it get much better than that?

Triple

Test Track: Many would disagree with me, claiming it's just an attraction where you ride in a convertible, many times you go faster on the highway. But to me, there's nothing like this attraction, especially in regards to the first half, with the "training facility." Yes, the outside is fun too, but I really enjoy the inside.
The Seas With Nemo and Friends: I am a big fan of this attraction. From the outstanding queue, to the scenery in the attraction, to the catchy song. My only drawback on this attraction is the story is a bit contrived....it's almost exactly the same as the movie. With it being in Epcot, I would have liked to have seen it tell a better story, related to some sort of edu-tainment. But, it's a nice addition to the park, for sure.

Double

Mission:Space: It's a fun attraction, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't have the appeal that Disney intended. It's got all the right elements to it, creative, exciting, etc, but it just missed out on something. I can't put my finger on what, but it's missing it and I think that's the biggest problem.
Living With the Land: For being an attraction that's not considered one of the must dos by many people, this is actually a really great attraction. I just did it again this last trip and it's really a classic Disney attraction, so I think it's one that people should definitely take a look at.

Single

Captain EO: I really appreciate that Disney brought this attraction in. It was there to celebrate Michael Jackson and it was also a "new" show to replace a tired show. However, with that being said, as entertaining as this show is, it would be nice to see Disney replace this attraction (and area) with something brand spanking new. Good effort...but I would like to see something freshen this place up.
Journey into Imagination: This ties into the previous reasoning behind Captain EO. It's a semi-entertaining attraction and much better than what was previously there, given that they added a beloved character back, but it would be nice to see Disney freshen this place up.

Walk

Reflections of China: I just saw this on my last trip yet again, and while it's a great attraction in it's own right, it just does nothing for me.
Impressions de France: Again, I saw this on my last trip and again, it's one of those that does nothing for me. The only real thing going for it is that it has seats.

Ellen's Energy Adventure: I get the attraction here. It's got the whole edu-tainment factor that Epcot is famous for. However, with that being said, it is 2011, not 1995 and this attraction is in sore need of a refurb. Refurb it well and I think it could be an extremely great attraction once again.
The Circle of Life: This is another attraction which I think has the edu-tainment factor to it. If it weren't so boring and dated. Seriously, it needs to go.

So that's my take on the first two theme parks that Disney built in Orlando. Next week, I'll take a look at the other two.

Magic Kingdom

The castle show Cinderella's Holiday Wish will begin on Nov. 4th and will run to Dec. 30th. Showtimes will be at 7:15 pm on Nov. 4th and 5th and at 6:15 every other night.
Disney is testing a Fastpass to guests for a reserved viewing area in the Hub for the Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade. These Fastpasses will be given out at random until early Nov. (I've read Nov. 12th.) No word on what this test may or may not lead to.
The Magic, The Memories, and You will have a Holiday themed addition starting on Nov. 8th. It appears that this will be shown both for regular guests and for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party nights.

Epcot

Chita Rivera is the final celebrity announced for Candlelight Processional. She will perform on Dec. 16th - 18th.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

The Tropicals' last performance has been pushed back to Nov. 19th.

Rumors

Still hearing rumors that Test Track will be closed next year for a MAJOR rehaul. The new piece of information, the queue will be updated as well and it will include a NextGen Queue.
Also rumored to get a NextGen Queue, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
Still hearing that Jake from Jake and the Neverland Pirates is expected to come in Nov. for breakfast and lunch at Hollywood and Vine.
The Winnie the Pooh meet and greet in the UK is expected to be themed after Christopher Robin's bedroom.
Rapunzel is expected to get her own area in Italy. (Of all places...)

I Ran...I Ran So Far Away

I know I talked a little about my run last blog post, but I wanted to share a bit more about my first 5k experience.

I'm not a runner. Let's make that perfectly clear. My husband is the runner in the family. He does 5k's for fun on evening runs and just this year, he ran the St. Louis Half Marathon. Me, I get winded thinking of running! My joke when people have asked if I was ever going to run a race has always been, I only run if someone's chasing me!

However, over the past few years, a few of my trips to Walt Disney World have been centered around race weekends. I have gone to support friends who've run in both the January Weekend Half Marathon and also the Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend. I love being able to support my friends as they run! It's win-win. They run and I just get to watch! Cheering on your loved ones (and even strangers) is one of the most awesome things to do. It's such a rush knowing that you are helping give them a shot of adreneline in a time when they potentially need it. I have been a good supporter!

This year, all that changed. You see, I was the one people were cheering for! How's that, you ask? Well, this year, I ended up running the Halloween 5k on October 1st during the Wine and Dine Race Weekend.
It all happened because a friend of mine came down for the race weekend without his daughter. She had been signed up for the race, but it turned out Homecoming was that same weekend, so she opted to skip the race and go to Homecoming instead. This meant that my friend had paid for a race no one was going to run.

Out of all my friends who were down there for the weekend, I was one of the only ones who was not signed up already for the 5k that was somewhat open to the idea. I knew that it would surprise a lot of people if I said yes to running this race, so in one of those weird moments in my life, I said yes. I'll run the race in her place.

Like I said, I don't run...so this means that I had no training done, what-so-ever. The furthest I'd ever ran/walked at this point was a mile and a half on the treadmill when I sporadically worked out. I honestly didn't know how well I was going to do in this race. I didn't even know how fast I could accomplish the race in. I was just hoping I wouldn't come in last.

So, on Oct. 1st, I got up at 5 am (I managed to get a decent night of sleep for myself...this was going to be one long day to begin with...I was expecting to stay up to 3 am for the Wine and Dine After Party that night!) and I got ready. I put on the tennis shoes I thankfully brought with me and the shorts I ended up having to buy at the Wide World of Sports Expo and ventured out in the dark to meet my friend who was going to run the race with me.

This year, the race took place at Disney's Animal Kingdom. When we got to the parking lot, we were floored! There was a huge line of cars all waiting to be parked. I couldn't believe all these people were going to be running this race!

Finally, I made my way up to the corral in my time slot (I picked the slowest one, the 13:00-15:00 mile) and was ready to go. The National Anthem played and then the next thing I knew, BOOM, the fireworks exploded and the race had begun! All the sudden, it was my turn to run. So, my friends and I took off.
We ran through the parking lot of Disney's Animal Kingdom and then make our way through the front entrance. It was really neat to get to run through to see the Tree of Life show up in my field of vision. Another neat thing was to see characters set up so you could meet and greet them. I didn't do that this run though, I was concentrating on not finishing last!

My friend was keeping track of how far we had ran and at this point, when we checked, we'd already gone a little over a mile! Wow...ok...this isn't so bad. I couldn't believe I'd already ran that far without much trouble.

Then we went backstage. This became the long part of the race. Backstage had to have been at least a mile, though while running it, it felt like it was about 5! We just kept running and running without seeing the turnaround anywhere. Finally, after what seemed like forever (because there wasn't really anything exciting to look at backstage) we came upon the turn around point! At this point, the run became a little easier because I knew what I was running to. I was on my way to the finish line. (I guess I shoud specify...my friends and I ended up walking/running this race, mostly walking though due to high crowds, as well as fatigue...but I did run a good portion of the race!)

Once we came back onstage at the Animal Kingdom, the run became easier again. We ran past Expedition Everest, past Finding Nemo, and past Dinoland U.S.A. Then we went back through a backstage area again as the sun was coming up on the horizon. Finally we heard a Cast Member say, just around this corner is the Finish Line! As soon as I saw it, my legs suddenly got shifted into high gear. I took off running faster than I've ever ran before! There was my end! It was in sight!

As soon as I crossed the Finish Line...I did something I wasn't expecting. I had to fight back the tears. I was SO proud of my accomplishment! I had done it! I had done what I thought was impossible. With the help of my friends, I had ran a 5k! 3.1 miles in just about 49:00!

So where am I going with all this? If you've ever thought of running a Disney race ever...and even if you haven't...do it! There is something so amazing about accomplishing a Disney race. I am so proud to say that my first race was a Disney race.

The question is...will this non-runner run another Disney race? I'm not sure. I still am not a runner...I still am not a huge fan of running in general. However, I will tell you...I am not counting the idea out. Disney makes the races seem so easy. So, you never know. I may just decide to sign up next time! Maybe I did catch the running bug.

The Golden Oak Outpost in Frontierland has changed their menu, only serving chicken nuggets and fries.

Epcot

A new acrobat troupe has appeared at the China Pavilion. The Jeweled Dragon Acrobats perform 5 days a week. Make sure to pick up a times guide to see when they'll be performing on your trip.
From now until Oct. 21st, the Seas With Nemo and Friends will have a delayed opening of 11 am while ongoing maintenance work is being done in the pavilion.

Epic October 2.0

Wow...hard to believe that it was already 2 weeks ago that I was in WDW for Epic October. It feels like I just got back yesterday. That always seems to happen though after I get back from WDW. Those first few weeks seem to fly right by.

This year's Epic October was, as I expected, full of Epicness. Lots of great time with friends, both new and old. The weekend was one of crazy proportions, with little sleep involved for all, but it was all so worth it in the end.

While I won't go over everything step by step, I will talk about some of the highlights of my trip and the weekend overall.

First, I want to thank everyone who came to the Be Our Guest Podcast meet up. We had a bunch of you with us as we traveled along the World Showcase promenade, sampling all the delectable treats that were available for the Food and Wine Festival. While it was SUPER HOT out, which made it hard to want to eat anything at all, it was so great to see so many wonderful listeners come out to meet each other.

I also want to express my thanks to Jay Griffith. This past summer, when we did our Second Annual Be Our Guest Podcast Live Show, Jay selflessly volunteered himself to drink 1 Beverly for every $500 raised. Because of all the generousness of our listeners, Jay was forced to drink 11 Beverly's. We were all scared that he was gonna upchuck, but he managed to get them down, with a little help. To see the video of the Beverly Binge, here it is.

Also, can I just say how great the other events were that were held by those in the Disney Community. I was able to enjoy AJ's Foodie Fest and Touring Plan's meet at La Hacienda which were both spectacular. Both these people know how to throw a big party! In addition, I want to congratulate Lou Mongello on raising a staggering amount of money for Give Kids The World with his 40 Hour Live Show, which I got to participate in as someone who got out of The Box! There were so many great events this weekend, that I hate that I missed some of them. Unfortunately, time was just so limited.

During this trip, I also participated in the Halloween 5K. This was not something I planned on doing. My famous statement is I don't run unless someone is chasing me. However, this trip, Mike's step-daughter Paige decided she wanted to go to Homecoming and he'd already paid the money for her to run, so I decided to take it.

So, with no training whatsoever, I ran/walked a 5k. (The furthest I'd walked/ran before was about 1.5 miles...not 3.1.) I was quite proud of myself and my emotions definitely got to me when I finished.. I fought back the tears after I crossed the finish line. I wasn't expecting to get emotional, but I was just so proud of myself for doing something so out of character. Would I run another Disney race? Maybe....I definitely wouldn't count it out. It was certainly an experience I will never forget.

I also want to talk briefly about the fact that that same weekend was the 40th Anniversary for the Magic Kingdom. What a special day to be in the MK. The crowds definitely showed up that day, but I wouldn't have wanted to be in any other park. It was so special being there to experience the special dedication and the fireworks that night. I also tried to experience attractions that were actually open on opening day to make the whole day even more festive.

Finally, as many of you know, Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is one of my favorite events the Magic Kingdom (and perhaps the entireWDW Resort) holds. Even though I've been to this party 5 times now, it still excites me. (And one of these times I'll learn to put the camera down and actually enjoy the fireworks and parade without looking through a lens.) I cannot say enough good things about this party, as I munch on leftover Halloween Candy.

In closing, I just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who I got to spend time with. I wish, for everyone, that it could have been more time with everyone. You are all true friends and I'm so blessed that you are

Hello!

So, it's been a crazy few weeks! I had an amazing time in WDW for Epic October weekend! It was a magical time with great meet ups with amazing friends! Then, right after I came back from Florida, I had to return back to St. Louis to get my belongings to move down to Albuquerque. My furniture is expected to be delivered on Wednesday.

I appreciate all your patience with the lack of blog posts lately. I hate not being able to bring you great blog posts, but I literally have not been able to due to all this. Thank you all so much for your patience! I hope to return back to normal starting next week, but at this point, I simply don't know.

But you all didn't come here to hear me yammer on....you came here for the dirt...and I've got it! So here we go!

Magic Kingdom

Big Thunder Mountain will be closed for a lengthy refurb from January 9th, 2012 until May 28th.
Dumbo will close down for it's relocation starting on Jan. 9th, 2012 and will be reopening Feb. 18. This will allow us to assume that when it reopens, it will open in the Storybook Circus area, which means that at least part of the Storybook Circus area will open at this time too.
Also, it's come out that the Great Goofini and the Storybook Circus Train Station is expected to open in early 2012.
The Liberty Square Riverboat will be down for refurb from Jan. 28th - Feb. 3rd.

Epcot

Via Napoli is offering pizza by the slice from the outside counter window until Nov. 12th.
Geena Davis will be replacing Whoopi Goldberg in the Candlelight Processional on Dec. 2nd and 3rd.

Disney's Animal Kingom

Festival of the Lion King is operating Fastpass until Oct. 15th. You can pick up your Fastpasses at the former Tough To Be A Bug Fastpass area.
The Expedition Everest Challenge will take place May 5th.

Magic Kingdom

The Magic Kingdom Parking Lots have seen a redo. The parking lot section names have changed. Originally themed around classic Disney characters and Dwarves, now the new parking lot sections are themed around Villains and Heroes. The new characters include Woody, Aladdin, Peter Pan, Simba, Mulan and Rapunzel (Heroes lot), and Zurg, Jafar, Hook, Scar, Cruella and Ursula (Villains lot).
For those that will be attending the 40th anniversary (me!) here's a list of what's expected to take place on Oct. 1st:

A special 40th Anniversary presentation will be held on the Castle Stage at 10am.

Wishes with a special finale will be held at 9pm.

40th Anniversary cupcakes will be available on the Main Street Bakery, along with a whole range of special 40th merchandise.

Disney Announces...Avatar...for Disney's Animal Kingdom

That's right....today, Disney announced that Disney's Animal Kingdom at the Walt Disney World Resort would be getting an Avatar themed world.

This new land will be themed after Avatar and the next two sequels that are set to potentially be released in 2014 and 2015 with aspects of all 3 movies incorporated within. The new land is set to break ground in 2013 with a completion date of 2016. Disney and James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment are still in the design phase for this trip to Pandora, so the details on what exactly is coming hasn't yet been decided. It's also unknown as of right now where in the park this new land will be located. There are a few expansion pads that are available, however, there's also the land of Camp Minnie-Mickey which has also been rumored to be going away in the near future.

Now, I could have fired off an initial Blog Post right when it was announced, because I had a very strong opinion when I heard the news, but I decided that I was going to let this news settle....marinate, if you will...and really let me take everything in. All the reaction, all the info...everything.

So after a little perspective, I do think that this is an interesting development. Personally, this is a movie that I haven't seen, so it's for me hard to judge 100%, but I also know that I had absolutely no desire to see the movie. So there is that.

My initial gut reaction was this doesn't really fit into Animal Kingdom all that well. AK is all about animals, real and mythical...so I could be on board with the whole mythical thing...but the creatures of Avatar aren't even really mythical...they are aliens from what I gather...thanks to IMDB. (If this is wrong, please do correct me.) Aliens, to me, are not mythical creatures...not even close. And while I gather that this movie had underlying themes of protecting the environment and keeping things that are native, native...I have to wonder if blue aliens are the right choice to relay that message for a park like Disney's Animal Kingdom.

I also have a feeling that this is Disney's response to Harry Potter. Here's my problem with that...Harry Potter has, so far stood the test of time for 10+ years...with it's books and movie sequels already proving themselves. Avatar, while it is set to have sequels, only has 1 movie right now, which came out only 2 years ago. Yes, it's raked in a ton of money and won tons of awards and it's obviously still early in it's franchise history, but I wonder if they are maybe jumping the gun with this. I mean, there's no way to know when a movie's sequels are going to be hits or not and just because the original film had tremendous success, doesn't mean the others will.

That's why I'm weary about this becoming a whole land themed around the film. I think I would have less of a meh feeling about it if it were just one attraction. When you start talking about a whole land...that's when things start to get sticky.

My other kind of issue about this is one that I've had for a while. Once again, Disney is building something that's based off a franchise. We haven't seen anything from Disney not based off a franchise since 2006 when Everest opened. Keep in mind that by the time this will be built, it will have been 10 years since anything based off an original concept had been built. At this point, I highly doubt Disney will announce anything based off original ideas, unless they decide to do something new for Epcot. But at this rate, I don't think anything for Epcot will be announced for at least a year. So, that would mean at the earliest, if Epcot actually were to see a brand new type attraction not based off an already established franchise, it wouldn't be completed until the year 2014, maybe. That could even be pushing it.

Now with all the above being said, I do realize though that not everything Disney does is going to appeal to everyone. The best example I have of that, and is something that I'm directly not in love with, Star Wars. This is another franchise that Disney has under their belt that I have absolutely no interest in. It's well known that I've never seen a single Star Wars movie and like Avatar have no real desire to see. Yet, I still will go on Star Tours at least once during my trip. (Although I will readily admit that with this new version of Star Tours with the different sequences, I am lost a lot more than I was previously.) So, while this new Avatar land is something that will not appeal to everyone and Disney doesn't have the luxury to do something that will appeal to everyone (a company like Disney could never appeal to every single demographic with a new ride announcement, that's just plain and honest fact) it will be something that some will most definitely enjoy and will like being able to be immersed in.

So, even though this doesn't necessarily appeal to my personal tastes, I am excited about Disney's Animal Kingdom getting some well needed love, especially in the form of a land that is so desperately needs. The park is severely lacking in attractions and this should definitely rectify that. Also, we have to keep in mind that we don't know what they do plan on doing with the land, so while my knee jerk reaction is to be skeptical and dislike it even, I do think that I am going to try to keep an open mind for the most part and see what's announced in the future with it. I mean it is a long way away before we even see ground broken on Pandora.

The Mouse-standing List: Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party

Recently it’s become more and more evident that Fall is one of my favorite times of year to visit Walt Disney World. Not only do you have lighter crowds, and often times Free Dining, but you also have great events like the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival and perhaps the event that I love the most, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

Of course, this particular event is popular with parents who have children, but let me tell you it is most certainly a blast for those of us adults without children who want to get in the Halloween spirit as well. This particular party is one that, time after time, I keep going back to with my total being 4 and counting as I’m going back again in just a couple of weeks!

So what is it that makes this event so exciting?

First of all you’ll need to check out Mickey’s Boo To You Halloween Parade. This parade is INCREDIBLE! I am not a parade person so when I say it’s good, it’s good. You’ll get to see some of the most unique floats out there including dancing Haunted Mansion ghosts and gravediggers (don’t miss the gravediggers!), pirates pillaging from Pirates of the Caribbean, the Disney Villains make a spooky appearance and even the Country Bears get in on the action. (Watch out for the country scene though! The clucking gets a tad annoying!) One little note…you will get the song stuck in your head (I’m singing it now). It’s a fact and it happens every time. Don’t try to fight it…it’s fun to sing along with “Boo To You!” This parade is shown twice per night at 8:15 pm and at 10:30 pm.

You also don’t want to miss the Happy HalloWishes Fireworks Spectacular! To me this is the best fireworks show I’ve seen in the Magic Kingdom. The Ghost Host tells the story as the Disney Villains attempt to take over (as they always do). These fireworks really are spook-tacular! The show takes place each night at 9:30 pm.

For those who are young and even those of us who are young at heart, make sure to visit the Trick or Treat Stations. Even adults can get in on the action. Lots of times you’ll get name brand stuff deposited in your bag. There are areas all over the park to visit and you can visit them multiple times throughout the night. Make sure to check the park map for the Trick or Treat Stations locations. Also, make sure to check out the new Br'er Rabbit's Laughin Place Candy Patch. This, I have a feeling is in place to make up for the Treat Trail that once ran from Tomorrowland back to Mickey's Toontown Fair.

Another really cool aspect of the Halloween Parties is that the characters get in on the fun too! Many of them dress up in their Halloween costumes to pose for pictures with guests. One special photo opportunity is that the Seven Dwarves are often all together for these party nights. They can be found back in Frontierland If you plan on getting your photo with them, make sure to arrive early as this is one popular meet and greet! (I've heard of up to hour waits by 7:00pm.) When looking for any character, check your party guide to see where they will be doing their meets as they will change this year with the closing of Toontown.

There are some tips that I’d like to pass along as a well-seasoned veteran. Dress up! You are not going to be the only person dressing up for this event. There will be others in their Halloween finest with some costumes being quite elaborate. This goes for you adults too! Make sure to get in on the fun! I mean, when was the last time you got to dress up for Halloween?

Second: bring your own candy bag from home. While Disney does provide bags, they are quite small and I’ve seen them fall apart as the bags get heavier through the night. Plus, I am one who likes to get a lot of candy so I often bring my own bag with me.

To tie in with that last tip my third is to make sure to visit the candy stops at the end of the night. In the beginning of the night you’ll typically only get 2 or 3 pieces of candy at a stop. If you wait to trick or treat more towards the end of the night, more often than not they’ll start giving you more and more candy (sometimes approaching handfuls!).

Fourth: when watching the parade make sure to see the Headless Horseman. He rides a few minutes before the parade starts and it is really a neat sight to see. As with all parades, if you can, try not to watch the parade on Main Street as the crowds are a lot heavier there. My suggestion is to watch from Frontierland. I would also suggest that you ALWAYS catch the second parade if possible. This is going to be the least crowded option for you.

Fifth: on a night like tonight the rides should be secondary. If you get to them that’s great but if not, no big deal. There is enough to keep you busy at this event that you won’t miss the rides if you don’t get to all of them. However, if you are going to try to do a few attractions make sure one of them is the Haunted Mansion! It is even spookier on party nights. You may even spot (and hear) some ghoulish delights on the front lawn.

Finally, while the party officially starts at 7 pm, you can usually arrive as early as 4 pm and still be let in. (Of course, this in unofficial policy and can change at a moment’s notice.) The party lasts until midnight.
Party dates for 2011 are: September 13, 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30. October 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31 and November 1.

To purchase tickets in advance guests can visit disneyworld.com/halloween or call 407-W-DISNEY. Advance purchase (prior to event day) savings of $6 per ticket are available for Sept. 13, 16, 20, 23, 27 and 30. Oct. 2, 6, 10, 11, 16, 18, 20, 23, 25, 27 and Nov. 1.

I was able to track down a copy of the map for this year's events, so if you're going, make sure to study the map, as like I've mentioned before, things have changed.

Magic Kingdom

Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom, a role-playing, attraction game was officially announced. Debuting in early 2012, this new game allows for guests to have Merlin the Magician recruit them to become apprentice sorcerers and then help them with maps and clues that show where and how to defeat an army of Disney villains.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

The band, The Tropicals will perform their last performance on Oct. 29th.
The rumor was correct. Disney will indeed have a character lunch at Tusker House. Starting Dec. 4th, Donald's Dining Safari Lunch will be a buffet that's available from 11am to 2:45pm daily and will vary in cost by season from $25.99 to $29.99 for adults and $14.99 to $16.99 for children ages 3 to 9. Foods available will include spit-roasted meats, unique salads, creative vegetarian offerings, hearty stews and desserts, everything with an African flare to it.

General WDW News

In why didn't they do this sooner news...Disney is now sending reminder emails to guests 24 hours before their Dining Reservation is scheduled. Included in the email are your confirmation number, location, date/time, and party size, along with a link to modify or cancel the reservation.

Rumors

When Gaston's Tavern opens with the new Fantasyland, the rumor is that Disney will be serving some sort of frothy concoction, similar in nature to Butterbeer, that's found over at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
In MNSSHP rumors, Angelica will join Captain Jack Sparrow on this year's Pirates Float in the Boo to You Parade and Christopher Robin will be doing meets with the rest of the gang from the Hundred Acre Woods.

Magic Kingdom

Columbia Harbor House has unveiled a new menu. Now, guests may dine on grilled salmon with couscous and broccoli, a Lobster Roll, and a Broccoli Peppercorn Salad. Also, now guests who choose can get steamed broccoli as a side instead of fries.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

The Fantasmic Refurb has been pushed back a few days, now the refurb will begin Jan. 9th. The reopening date will remain the same, Feb. 13th. Also, it appears that Fantasmic will be returning to it's nightly basis, after seeing the schedule all the way into March.
There are new specialty hot dogs at Fairfax Fare. They are a Macaroni & Cheese and Truffle Oil, a Barbecue Pork and Coleslaw, and a Burrito Dog with Lettuce, Tomato, Cheddar, Jalapeno, and Sour Cream

General WDW News

All 5 Disney Golf Courses are set to be managed by Arnold Palmer Golf Management.
Soda prices have increased at the parks, $2.59 and $2.89 respectively.
The MobileMagic phone app is now free for all Android Phones with the roll out for iPhones coming this Fall.
A test that is going on right now in the parks is that Disney is sporadically enforcing Fastpass wait times. In the past, if your Fastpass had been expired from that day, you could still use it later in the day with no trouble. Now it appears that Disney may be changing the policy on this.
It appears that Sanaa has introduced a breakfast option for guests staying at Kidani Village.

Rumors

Rumors are saying that the Journey to Narnia attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios is set to close Sept. 10th.
It appears that Pirate Goofy is back at Pirates and Woody and Jessie have moved to the Splash exit.
I've read that more work is being done to prepare for the next potential DVC resort, after the rumored Grand Floridian DVC is built....Ft. Wilderness appears to be next in line for DVC.
Pete's Silly Slideshow in the new Fantasyland appears to be a meet and greet area, as it was expected to be.
Duffy will be a meet and greet character for MNSSHP, where he will be dressed like a pumpkin.
With all the new construction going around at the Magic Kingdom, here's another area that may see some work in the recent future...Cosmic Ray's is expected to get an overhaul and renovation, with the end date expected to be somewhere around Aug. 2012.
Disney's Animal Kingdom may be testing a character meal for lunch at Tusker House potentially starting later this year.

My So Called Disney Life

So, as many of you know, I was not always a Disney fanatic. The parks scared me as a child and I simply didn't want to go, with one notable instance that I can remember of being in my grandma and grandpa's kitchen BEGGING my parents not to take me. PLEASE let me stay with grandma and grandpa instead.

Of course, as a kid, I did love the Disney movies though. I wanted to be Ariel....matter fact, I sang Part of Your World in a talent show, which I have on video somewhere....and no...I'm not sharing it. :) But the Disney Renaissance of Movies was something that was very strong in my background growing up. Those movies shaped my childhood. However the Disney theme parks were another monster of their own being something just I wasn't so fond of.

Once I did get sucked into the Disney Bubble...my life changed drastically. I started what I like to call My Disney Life, with Disney shaping my entire 20s in a way that is quite profound.

I started out as a simple Disney Parks Fanatic...and I went through phases. At first I would try to soak up as much information as I possibly could. I would be on message boards consistently throughout the day (seriously...I would be on message boards the entire day...it made my parents so mad because it interfered with work...but it was like a drug...I couldn't get enough. I was addicted to them. It was bad.)

My visits to the parks were also very different. Back then, I would try to accomplish anything and everything I possibly could. This was because I never knew when my next trip down was going to be. I would drive Brian crazy because we had to be going non-stop.

Somewhere in the middle of my Disney Life, the whole Save Disney campaign came about. (For those who don't remember, this campaign was a time when Eisner was really loosing touch with the parks and the parks began the whole cutting things to make profits more fiasco that they still sort of employ to this day.) Now, I was quite young still when all this happened...so my memory of the details are fuzzy. All I can remember was noticing things that weren't being done in the parks. This is where my first brush of cynicism with the parks started. All the sudden my rose colored glasses slipped down a bit. Of course, I still loved the parks, but I started seeing things from a different perspective. It was at this stage when I started being a realist of the Disney Parks. Knowing not everything Disney does was going to make me happy and my catchphrase at the time was "Disney is a business and they can do what they want."

This realism has stuck with me to this day, but I think somewhere in the middle I realized that I still enjoyed the parks, that they still made me happy, so I could have a good mixture of Rose Colored Glasses and Disney Cynicism in my repertoire. I realized it's not bad to see things from both perspectives.

That takes us to 2008, when I got a message from Mike, asking me if I wanted to help him with his podcast he was starting. Of course, as a Disney fan, I thought...yeah that would be fun! I'd always wanted to start a podcast after listening to Lou Mongello's, but I never could figure out a hook for one. At first, I was thinking that I'd just be on one episode talking about one of my trips. Little did I know Mike had other plans for me. :) Hence, starting with Episode 5, I became a regular on the show, along with Debbie.

So, at this point, in my Disney Life, I starting thinking, I am going to have to pay way more attention to what I do in the parks. There are people who are going to be listening to this show that know a lot about Disney and I don't want to let them down by having a majority of them know way more than I do. (I mean, all things considered, at this point, I was still relatively new to this whole Disney fanatic thing! My knowledge of the parks was really only from the few trips I remembered as a kid and the few trips I had taken as a recent Disney fan. I was well aware that I was quickly going to be considered to be a Disney expert by being on this show. (Granted, I still know I'm no expert!) So, I knew I had to learn my stuff.)

From that point, I started trying things I hadn't before. I started going into attractions I never considered doing, I started visiting restaurants for the pure reason of doing "research", and I started doing things outside the parks so I could increase my knowledge base even more. To me, that's bee one of the best things about doing this podcast. I've been able to widen my Disney scope all in the name of research. (Of course, the other really amazing thing is being able to meet all kinds of amazing people, who would never have been in my life if it weren't for this show.)

Also, the podcast has allowed me to go to events I would have never thought I would get to go to. This started back in 2008 when we went down for Mousefest. Then of course there was the Marathon in 2009, Epic October in 2010, the cruise this year, not to mention Epic October 2.0. So really the podcast has just made me spend more money to get to the Disney parks more often! :)

The one thing I have to say, and I'm not trying to sound snobbish here, but it's kind of cooly weird being a female Disney podcaster. There aren't that many of us. I can only name a handful of us, and most of them are on our show. I love being one of the few female podcasters in what is a predominantly male driven medium. And I have to say I am in extraordinary company. The other women who are on podcasts are all very amazing!

Like I said, Disney has definitely shaped who I am, both as a child and as a young woman. My life has something Disney in it every day. Whether it's checking out Twitter, reading my Google Reader, podcasting, working on blog posts, etc, Disney makes a presence. It is a comfort, with this move to Albuquerque, knowing that my life will still have a sense of normalcy in it...because my Disney Life is such a huge part of my everyday life. It will be like I never moved at all!

I cannot wait to see where my Disney Life goes in the next chapter of my real life. I already know I want to make the pilgrimage to Disneyland (hopefully next year) and I'm sure that I will have a kid at some point in the next 10 years of my Disney Life, so I am anxious to see how those things change my perspective on Disney once again. And I really do hope that you will continue along in my journey! Because, you all are such an important part of My Disney Life.

A Survivial Guide to Those NOT Going to D23

It's always an exciting time to be a Disney fan during D23 Expo weekend. So much new information comes out about the parks, resorts, movies, television, and a ton of other Disney owned media. It's also an incredible weekend to actually get to experience first hand. The convention center is amazing, chock full of really cool exhibits and experiences.

But what about those of us who are unfortunate enough not to get to go. How do we survive the torture of being stuck at home while others get to be there first hand for the fun?

The best advice I have is to throw yourself into the Disney Online Community and all the resources that are available to us now.

Thanks to things like Twitter and Live Video Feeds, it's almost like we're there, experiencing what those in attendance get to experience. Of course, it's not quite the same seeing it all happening from behind a computer screen, but if you can't physically be there, this really is the next best thing.

So, without knowing 100% who's going to be doing what during this D23 weekend, here's where I'm going to start getting my information...my Survival Guide.

First, I am excited to join The Box People and Lou Mongello at www.d23expolive.com Last time I was unable to be a Box Person because I was actually in WDW during that same weekend. Another choice, is WDW News Today as a full force site for great info.

For those who missed my announcement on Twitter...I am moving here in the next few weeks to Albuquerque, NM. With that being said, blog posts may be not as regular as they normally are for a short while. I apologize for the interruption in posting. Hopefully, things will return to normal here by October, after I get back from my Epic October trip to the World. Thank you all for your patience as I move on with the next chapter of my life. The Halloween decorations will begin to be installed Aug. 29th.
Angelica will see her final day in the parks on Aug. 20th.

The Yakatori House in the Japan Pavilion will be closed for refurb until Nov. 15th.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Tower of Terror is now a part of Disney's Photopass System. The photo must be purchased to be added, much like it does at Space Mountain.

General WDW News

Magnetron at Downtown Disney's Westside will be closing on Sept. 30th. It will be replaced by BLINK by WetSeal. The store will sell apparel and jeans for women, teens, and children.
Also, Apricot Lane has officially opened on Pleasure Island.
The new monorail color has been announced and it is Peach!
The Sand Trap Bar and Grill at the Ospry Ridge Golf Club will be closed until the 21st for a brief refurb.
The Grand Floridian Spa will be closed for an 18 month refurb starting Sept. 19th.

Rumors

Hearing rumors that Test Track may go down for an extensive refurbishment in January.
A new musical stage show may be coming for the Studios. It may be replacing an older stage show.
Jake from The Neverland Pirates may be replacing the Little Einstein in October.

The rumored next campaign for 2012 may be called One More Disney Day. It's rumored that it may be similar to the Give a Day, Get a Disney Day campaign.

In The Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room

It has been a hard year for the Tiki Room Under New Management at the Magic Kingdom. Because of a fire that did decent enough damage, the Tiki Room closed early this year, which allowed for a refurb of this attraction.

Gone are Iago and Zazu....say audios to the title Under New Management...and welcome back an old familiar classic to the parks once again.

You see, on August 15th, the Tiki Room will reopen as Walt Disney's Enchanted Tiki Room. This "new", spruced up attraction will once again pay homage to Walt Disney's original vision once again. The attraction will feature a state of the art show-control system, remastered audio, and a new versatile and energy efficient lighting system.

This development is something that excites me greatly. For years I have missed the original version, knowing the only chance I was going to get to see it was to make the trek out to Disneyland at some point. I remember the previous version as a kid...one of the few things that has stuck with me as a child that hated Walt Disney World. The Enchanted Tiki Room was something that didn't scare me...so I took a shine to it.

A few years back I went in to see the Under New Management show (which by the way, that sign was misleading as I saw it on an earlier trip with my family in 2000 and I remember passing it up because we thought it was closed for refurb...not that it had been redone already to this new version) and I walked out thinking...well, not going back in there. So, I didn't.

Under New Management was always one of those attractions like Stitch to me...great in theory, bad in execution. It just didn't gel as well as Disney had planned on it doing.

So, I for one am very happy to see that a version similar to the original is coming back to the parks again. Even if it did take a fire to make it so. (Who's got the matches so we can get rid of Stitch too? Or better yet....let's see if we can get them to change the Imagination Pavilion?!)

This "new" attraction will be one of the first on my list I will see when I visit in October. And you better believe, I'll be singing right along with those birdies.

The crane will be on site for the instillation of the Castle Dreamlights from Sept. 12th - 26th.
The Magic, The Memories and You Castle Show is expected to run through the Holidays over the Castle Lights.
Tinkerbell and her Friends are now appearing at the Magic Kingdom at the site of the Adventureland Veranda. The new area is called Tinkerbell's Nook.

Epcot

Edward James Olmos and Lorraine Bracco have been added to the Candlelight Processional lineup. Edward James Olmos is scheduled to appear Dec. 4th - 6th and Lorraine Bracco is scheduled for Dec. 13th - 15th.
Chiquita is set to sponsor Living With The Land.
The dates for the 2012 Food and Wine Festival have been announced. They are Sept. 28th - Nov. 11th.

Jennings Osborne, creator of the Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights, has passed away. My thoughts are with his family.

The Seven Sacred Attractions

This week on the podcast, we got to talking about which attractions we thought would be in the parks in 25 years still and which ones we thought would be gone. Some were obvious and yet some we mentioned were quite shocking, especially some that we picked that would eventually disappear.

With that being said, I believe there are certain attractions in the Disney Parks, that minus a good refurb, should not disappear from the parks what-so-ever, no matter how old the parks get. These attractions are what make the parks what they are. They are the identities of Walt Disney World...they make it what people know and love...these are the Seven Sacred Attractions. (Well, I guess it would technically be Eleven Sacred Attractions because I also believe the attractions that I mentioned on the show are sacred too...so if you missed what those were...go listen to the podcast!)

1. Haunted Mansion: This attraction has some of the best effects of all time...and that's after 40 years! It's amazing how simple tricks can be so intriguing. Plus, Disney proved that even with a refurb, this attraction doesn't need to change much...it's still top notch.

2. Spaceship Earth: I know there were rumors about changing this attraction into a roller coaster years ago, but that would take out the very purpose or what Epcot is supposed to be about. Epcot is about Edutainment to it's core. It's about showing you something you may not have known before in a fun and inviting way. To me, the current version of Spaceship Earth is that...perfect Edutainment. It's about learning about communication and how it's been evolving and then we take a fun look into our "futures". Sure, our "futures" aren't likely to happen, but it is interesting to think...what if?

3. Tower of Terror: Yes...this is an attraction that I won't ride anymore, but let me tell you...it makes me sad that I can't. This attraction is Imagineering at it's utmost finest. The story here is so compelling. It is so wonderfully done and because of that, it is such a timeless attraction. There are also some stellar effects here as well. Plus, add in the randomness of you never know how many times you are going to drop and it takes an amazing ride and increases it's re-ride-ability even more, because you never know what you're going to get.

4. Expedition Everest: Ok, so I know the attraction is a shell of it's original self right now...but it still is one that makes me nervous. I still fear the Yeti. Plus that backwards section is pretty darn cool. And once again, this attraction is one that has a solidly good story to it, which is what Disney is founded on...telling good stories.

5. Space Mountain: The idea of Space Mountain is fabulous...a roller coaster in the dark. Couple that with Space travel and you have a winning idea. (Who wouldn't want to go to space?) Do I think this attraction may see another major refurb in the next 25 years, yes, but should Space Mountain exist in 25 years, yes. Yes, it should.

6. Splash Mountain: Once again...this attraction is built on story...and it must be a good story because it's built off an attraction that I have never seen, but still love. With that being said, I think that even though future generations will never see the movie this story is based off of, it's still going to be just as compelling. Plus, it's a water ride and people can't get enough of water rides, especially in the Florida heat.

7. Pirates of the Caribbean: Yes, I am heavy on the Magic Kingdom attractions, but that is because these are the ones that seem to be the most timeless. (I think it relates to the fact that a lot of Magic Kingdom attractions are based off of original ideas...something I am begging the current Disney management to look at continually doing...as it seems like lately they have not.) Pirates is something that people love, young or old, because it is fun. (Well, not the real idea of piracy, but you get what I'm saying.) It is a great attraction that the whole family can enjoy and get something out of. If you're a kid, you may love the catchy song, if you're an adult, you may still marvel at those AudioAnamatronics. Whatever it is, something draws you over that way. Plus, it's an incredible way to remember all that Walt had created for us.

So these are my Sacred Seven. The attractions that should always be there at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Epcot

The new Kakigori stand is now open and selling a bit more than just Kakigori. The new name is called the Kabuki Cafe and offers ice cream, smoothies, edamame or miso soup, and a variety of drinks, including some Japanese sodas and sake, plus more.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Lights, Motors, Action Extreme Stunt Show will be down for refurb from Oct. 3rd – Oct. 6th.
In additional Lights, Motors, Action news, Lightning McQueen has now joined the show.
Fantasmic will see a 5 week refurb from Jan. 4th - Feb. 13th.
Disney has announced they will no longer be continuing ESPN the Weekend.
One Man's Dream has been awaiting some new exhibits since it opened and now it appears they have arrived. Information about Shanghai and the Fantasyland Expansion have made their way to the attraction.

General WDW News

Monorail Coral is now back, after running the tracks as the Tronorail the past year.
The Magnolia Bend quiet pool at Port Orleans Riverside will be refurbished from Sept. 5th - Oct. 7th.

Rumors

Hearing rumors that a new game, similar to Kim Possible, is headed to the Magic Kingdom called Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom. It is said to offer up quests with the first quest looking to be headed to Adventureland. Hearing that the Firehouse on Main Street was closed to be re-purposed as the game's headquarters.

Last week, I got to see The Little Mermaid here live on stage at The Muny, our local outdoor theater. I had been dying to see it ever since it came out on Broadway, but knew I'd never get to New York. So, as soon as I found out it was coming to town, I immediately bought tickets.

As far as the show, it was pretty darn good. There were a few things I didn't care for, the sets were relatively sparse and the guy playing Sebastian (a Jamaican crab, of course) was Asian. (Not that there's any thing wrong with someone not Jamaican playing him, just that it was quite distracting watching someone Asian trying to accomplish a Jamaican accent. It didn't go very well.)

But watching the show, I couldn't help but think...they really should make some changes to the Voyage of the Little Mermaid attraction at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Voyage of the Little Mermaid, a theatrical production of the story of the movie The Little Mermaid, debuted in 1992...almost 20 years exactly and the show is relatively close to the same as it was when it first started showing, which has been cut down drastically from the actual movie.

But after 20 years and with new technology, this attraction could use an extensive upgrade, plus, since the new Broadway show has been introduced, there are some things that I think that were included in the Broadway version that could easily be brought in to enhance this attraction at the Studios. (I will preface this with the fact that I'm sure that because ours was a presentation of a Broadway show in an outdoor theater, some of the effects weren't quite the same. I am taking that into consideration.)

First of all, I would love to see them at least double the length of the show. Right now, it clocks in at about 17 minutes. That is not near enough time to show a quality retelling of this classic movie. I would like to see this attraction at least double in length. I know they are capable of having long shows in the parks, I mean Finding Nemo at Disney's Animal Kingdom is about 45 minutes long itself, so it should be no problem updating this attraction to around 30 minutes at least.

Now because they cut the movie into 17 quick minutes, they told a lot of the story via video. My next suggestion would be to not rely so heavily on video screens. The majority of Voyage is made up of video screens. To me, it's basically like watching the movie with a little bit of live interaction thrown in. I would love to see more live action. There is a ton that is missing here because of the screens (and because of the time factor again) that would be so great to see played out on stage.

And that brings me to my next little gripe. Please, for the love of pete...have Prince Eric talk himself! There is no reason that poor boy can't say his own lines.

Now, if they lengthened the show, I would definitely fix up both the beginning and the end of this show. You have lovely middle parts with great performances with Ariel singing Part of Your World and Sebastian singing Under The Sea. Oh and don't forget the scene with Ursala, but the beginning and middle...don't blink...you'll miss them. The beginning is the most stunted. We see the ship and then all the sudden Sebastian is singing Under the Sea. (Which by the way, Part of Your World comes before this song in the movie, but I get why you did it the way you did it Disney...it makes more sense in the storytelling on stage with this performance. Another reason the attraction should be updated.) I would really like to see both the beginning and the end fleshed out a bit more. Show us more of the story. What about a Kiss the Girl scene? Or seeing Ariel meet Eric? You can do a lot of different things to expand on this great story. Plus, you can still rely on the video screens to do the parts that are too difficult to do on such a small stage, but give us a bit more meat to our show.

Lastly, while I like most of the effects that the theater has (like the rain and the lightning), please, please, please, get rid of the lasers! It is 2011! We don't do lasers anymore...least of all lasers that look like they were created in the 90s! It is not a cool effect anymore. Please take it out and change it.

The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite movies of all time. I would love to be able to see an updated version of the Live Show at Walt Disney World. I know we're getting a great new attraction in Under the Sea-Journey of the Little Mermaid, but that's at the Magic Kingdom. It's high time this attraction saw some quality love.

The Fantasyland Refurb will include Scuttle's Scavenger Hunt. This appears to be an interactive game that looks to take place in the queue of the upcoming Little Mermaid attraction (at least, according to the concept art.)

Epcot

General WDW News

The Balzac kiosks in the theme parks have been removed as they are no longer for sale on property. Balzacs were the inflatable balls that they sold in places like the Epcot Breezeways.
Refillable Mugs may eventually be a thing of the past...at least in the sense that we have known them. This week, over at All Star Sports, a new monitoring system, employing RFID chips will begin being tested. RFID chips will also be embedded in regular soda cups as well, only allowing a guest to fill up the cup for the length of a meal (around 1 hour). The system will require 5 minutes between refills.
A new entertainment venue set to open at the site of the former Virgin Megastore. Splitsville, a bowling alley that combines bowling with billiards, dining, music, and nightlife is set to begin construction this Fall. Ridemakerz will be moving from this location to one in on the Marketplace side.

Rumors

While Disney insists that Hyperion Wharf is on hold, I keep hearing persistant rumors that the area is more than likely cancelled. Time will tell.

The Lunching Pad in Tomorrowland will be down for refurb from Aug. 29th – Sept. 13th.
Casey’s Corner on Main Street will be closed for refurbishment from Aug. 30th – Sept. 14th.
During evening Extra Magic Hours, guests will no longer be able to meet with the characters in Fantasyland. Also, the Town Square Theater will only be open for meets during park hours as well.
Tinkerbell and her Fairy friends will be returning to the Magic Kingdom in the Adventureland Veranda starting July 28th.
The Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade will be running two performances a day starting July 18th running to July 31st. The parade will be shown at both 12 pm and 3:30 pm.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

The Backlot Tour will be closed Sept. 4th – Spet. 24th.
In addition the Honey I Shrunk The Audience Movie Set Adventure will be closed from Sept. 4th – Sept. 25th

General WDW News

The dining room at Wolfgang Puck’s in Downtown Disney will be closed until July 18th.
The Magnolia Bend Leisure Pool at Port Orleans Riverside will be down for refurb Sept. 5th – Oct. 8th.
Over at Sanaa at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge in Kidani Village will be offering a new Animal Specialist dining experience starting Aug. 1st. The experience will feature a 4 course lunch with one of the resort's animal specialists, who will give an insiders view and answer any questions relating to the animals of the resort's savannahs. The cost will be $49 for adults, and $29 for kids ages 3 to 9.
The Congress Park quiet pool at Saratoga Springs will be closed for refurb from Aug. 1st - Sept. 2nd.
Beginning July 11th, the monorail service at Epcot will stop operating 1 hour after regular park closing and on Aug. 1st, the same will happen at the Magic Kingdom. What that means is that the monorail will not be operating during Evening Extra Magic Hours. Guests will now be transported by bus or boat instead.

A Dining Review: Via Napoli

One of the newest restaurants to open up in Walt Disney World at Epcot is Via Napoli.

Here they are well known for their pizza, as it is as authentic to real Italian pizza as you are going to get in Walt Disney World. The restaurant brings in real Italian ingredients and the pizza is made with water that is similarly made up of the same pH levels as to what is actually found in Naples. The pizzas are also cooked in these huge wood stoves that literally only take minutes to bake. This is as close to Italian pizza as you're going to get without actually visiting Italy!

Disney had previously been known to be lacking in the pizza department. For the most part, the pizzas found on property were not very good, though they were edible. (At least to me. One of my favorite places to eat in at Disney's Hollywood Studios is Pizza Planet.) The pizzas on property weren't anything to rave about though.

That is until now. I am a HUGE fan of Via Napoli!

Obviously, I am not a pizza snob...I don't hail from Chicago or New York, places that claim they make the best pizza...I am from a town who makes their own version of pizza on cracker thin crust with provel cheese...which I enjoy immensely, but many others who are pizza aficionados turn their nose to.

With all that being said, Via Napoli is pizza that months later, I still crave.

My favorite pizza is their Quattro Formaggi, which is made up of 4 cheeses, mozzarella, parmesan, fontina, provolone. This pizza I have dubbed as "Forget Your Husband Name Good." One bite of this pizza and you forget everything that you know! All you can concentrate on is how amazingly delicious it tastes.

Of course they do have other really great specialty pizzas including the Prosciutto e Melone made of fontina, mozzarella, prosciutto, and cantaloupe, and the Quattro Stagioni which has eggplant, artichokes, prosciutto, and mushrooms on it.

You can also create your own pizza, starting with a Margherita (tomato, mozzarella, and basil) and then you adding each additional topping of your choice.

If you are not a fan of pizza, the restaurant does offer additional Italian dishes as well, such as spaghetti and lasagna.

This last trip, I had the chance to try their family style house salad, which is only available for groups of 2 or more and is served exclusively with the pizza for $5 per person. The salad includes leaf lettuces, roasted red peppers, marinated mushrooms, olives, peperoncini, and a red wine vinaigrette. Not being a salad person, I thought it was just ok.

Also, I tried the Arancini which is fried risotto balls filled with mozzarella & meat ragu. This sounded good, but also sounded a little strange to me. One bite though and I was sold. They were quite delicious, though the texture of risotto threw me off a bit as I was eating it.

For dessert, I quite liked the Zeppole di Caterina which is ricotta cheese fritters, served with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. I liked the taste of them dipped in the chocolate sauce the best. The next time I'm down there though, I'll have to try the tiramisu. I am a fan of this dessert and interested in seeing what a real Italian restaurant at Disney would do with it.

In all, I find Via Napoli to be a great value of a restaurant. Yes, the pizzas are a tad expensive on their own, but trust me, they are good. And if you get one and share it amongst your table, plus get an appetizer or salad, you should be set with plenty of food to go around for all, without breaking the budget.

The Firehouse Gift Station will close on July 10th to be re-purposed.
Flynn Rider will no longer be doing meet and greets on a daily basis. Guests who do want to meet Flynn will apparently be able to do so at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.
The Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse will be closed for refurb Sept. 8th - Nov. 18th.

Epcot

During the Food and Wine Festival, the Odyssey Lounge will be open serving specialty cocktails and wines. In addition, the area will provide games, internet access, and mobile charging stations.

General WDW News

A new test for concierge guests is being tried out. Called the Concierge Club Connection, it gives guests personalized assistance during their vacation via phone, email and text. Access to dining reservations, and park information will all be available from 7am to 10pm, with messaging service outside these hours. This is only available at the Grand Floridian and it's by pre-selection only. This test is expected to continue through the end of July.
The relocated Harley Davidson store is now open.
Apricot Lane has been confirmed to open at the location of the former Harley Davidson store. The store is expected to open later this summer. The store is expected to sell branded fashion apparel, jewelry, handbags, accessories and gifts.
The Four Seasons Hotel's opening has been pushed back to 2014.
Hoop Dee Doo Review will be trying out new show times starting Nov. 13th - Feb. 11th. The new times will be adjusted to 4 pm, 6:15 pm, and 8:30 pm,

Rumors

It appears that the Little Einsteins may be phased out. It seems that for sure they will no longer being doing meet and greets at DHS starting in August. It also appears that they may be removed from the Play and Dine experience at Hollywood and Vine sometime later this year.
Also hearing a brand new meet and greet location might be built for Darth Vader.
Attractions that are rumored to be open during the Wine and Dine Half Marathon After Party include Soarin, Test Track, and Mission Space.
Ohana may be trying a new seating procedure starting in August. Group seatings will be done with four seating done per night.

After well over a year and a half of planning and waiting (and waiting and waiting) we sailed the seas last week aboard the Disney Dream!

It was an absolutely amazing trip. One that I will never forget for many reasons. New friendships were made, old friendships were strengthened, fun was had every turn, sunburns were plentiful and a ton of food was eaten!

Now, I could describe the cruise to you OR I could show you all the fun that was had...

Top 5 Favorite Things for The Whole Family To Do At Disney's Hollywood Studios

This week is Disney's Hollywood Studios Appreciation Week!

For those who don't know, last year, Matt Hochberg of Studios Central started this week as a way to show that the Disney's Hollywood Studios Park really is one that should be celebrated. It's a park that many consider to potentially be a half day park, a notion that I believe to be a misconception.

Whenever I go to The Studios, I always find more than enough to do to fill an entire day. There's tons to do in the form of attractions and shows, plus countless other interactions you can have at this park. Spending less than a day here is "distinctly unpatriotic". (Distinctly Un-Disney? Maybe that works better. :) )

Disney's Hollywood Studios as of late is most commonly known for their Thrill attractions. They have some of the best around right there on Sunset Blvd...The Tower of Terror and Rock n' Roller Coaster. Not to mention the brand new Star Tours. But those attractions don't work if you've got little ones who can't meet the height requirement. And it's because of those who think like this that make many believe this park is a half day one.

So, I thought I'd do another Top 5 List...my Top 5 Favorite Things For The Whole Family To Do At Disney's Hollywood Studios.

First, we have the Streetmosphere characters, otherwise known as the Citizens of Hollywood. Honestly, I could watch these shows all day! For those who've never stopped to watch before, basically, guests get the chance to meet with the people who run the town at Disney's Hollywood Studios. You'll get to interact with directors, actors, actresses, agents, and yes, you may even have a run in with the Police. These are total improv skits done right there, with you in tow, and I'm telling you, they are FUNNY! Shows run continuously throughout the day (usually opposite the Disney Channel Rocks Show schedule). My favorite show to watch is the Funniest Citizen of Hollywood! It's done in the late afternoon and it is simply a hoot!

My next one is a show that I think the whole family needs to go experience and that is the American Idol Experience. So, if you all like Idol, this is a no brainer...but if you're not the biggest fan of Idol, you may be thinking to yourself, Rikki, why on earth would I want to watch a show about karaoke?

The American Idol experience is about as close to the whole concept of a "real working Studio" that Disney tried to personify years back. This show makes it seem like you're really at a taping of a Live American Idol Show. And yes, of course, there's the singing (which if you can make it into the Finale Show, you'll see a much more quality performance if listening to bad singing isn't your thing.) but it's more often than not a good, quality show where you can share in family time.

My third choice is one that always seems to have a little debate surrounding it, but, it's one of those classic Disney's Hollywood Studios attractions that can't and shouldn't be missed, no matter what. I'm talking about taking the ride through the movies over at The Great Movie Ride. While the debate rages on surrounding this attraction based on the movies that are portrayed in it's building, the fact of the matter is, this is one of the attractions where the whole family can get something out of it. (Of course, you'll need to be aware, there are a few scary moments that could potentially scare little ones, but they are fleeting.) You can have fun delighting in movies your family may have seen or you can discover movies that maybe you all should sit down together to watch in the future. This attraction is the epitome of what a Disney attraction should be, so no matter how you feel about some of the movie's relevancy, I think it is considered to be a Disney staple attraction. If it was ever taken away, it would upset the whole balance of the Studios. It would be like removing the Haunted Mansion from the Magic Kingdom.

Next we're gonna go on an adventure with the Muppets over at Muppet-Vision 3D. This attraction has stuff for everyone, really. Kids, of course, will get a kick out of the Muppets in general. Adults will be able to enjoy all those gags and puns designated for a more mature audience. This attraction, even though I've seen it a countless number of times, still gets me cracking up, as if it's the first time I'm seeing it. And even if you have seen it before, watch, closely, because there is going to be something that you've missed on a previous viewing that isn't so obvious at first glance. (My favorite is the characters from the different countries in the finale scene chanting "It's A Small World After All".) The Muppets are timeless and that is why they are perfect for the entire family to get to enjoy together.

My final choice would be the most obvious choice there is at Disney's Hollywood Studios and that would be Toy Story Midway Mania. Even the crowds would agree with me, as this is one attraction that consistently has high wait times. (And if you were even thinking of getting a Fastpass, better do it before noon...and they may even be gone before that depending on the day!) The best part about this attraction is that no matter how old you are (there is no height requirement for this attraction), you can play and compete with your family to see who's the best of the best at this interactive attraction. There's nothing like a little sibling rivalry, or better yet, parent/kid competition and this attraction brings it! So, start the trash talk now! Cause somebody's goin' down!

Of course, these are just the tip of the iceberg attractions that I think family's shouldn't miss at Disney's Hollywood Studios. There are a TON more (and to name a few, Voyage of the Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast Live on Stage, Fantasmic, The Magic of Disney Animation, a meal at 50s Prime Time Cafe...just to name a few!)

Disney Dining Plans 2012

It's that time of year again! The time has arrived once again where we take a look at the Disney Dining Plans. The 2012 Disney Dining Plans have been announced and as there are every year, there are some changes that have been made that you should be aware of.

First of all, it appears that Disney has made one change to the Quick Service Dining Plan. Before, guests were allowed 2 snack options per day, per person. With the new 2012 plan, that has been reduced down to just 1 snack allowed per day, per person.

The other change that appears to have taken place is to the Basic Dining Plan. New for 2012, guests will be given one refillable mug per person that is to be used for refills only at quick service locations at your Disney resort.

Those appear to be the major changes with the new 2012 Dining Plans. Of course, as more details are to come, they will be included in this article as we receive them.

With that being said, let's take a look at an explanation of each of the 2012 Disney Dining Plans, plus the pricing structure for this upcoming year. (Included in parenthesis are 2011 and 2010 prices in order.)

Quick-Service Plan
Adults 10+: $34.99/night ($34.99/$31.99)
Child 3-9: $11.99/night ($11.99/$9.99)

The Quick Service dining plan allows each guest to get 2 Counter Service Meals per day (which includes an entree or combo meal, dessert or juice, and a non-alcoholic beverage), 1 Snack Options per day, and 1 Refillable Mug per person for the length of your stay.

Basic Plan*
Adults 10+: $51.54/night ($45.99/$41.99)
Child 3-9: $15.02/night ($11.99/$11.99)

The Basic Plan (Also known as the Standard Plan) comes with 1 Counter Service Meal per day (which includes an entree or combo meal, dessert or juice, and a non-alcoholic beverage), 1 Sit Down Meal per day (which includes entree, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage. Or, if eating at a buffet, the full buffet.) Also 1 Snack credit per day and 1 refillable mug per person.

Deluxe Plan*
Adults 10+: $85.52/night ($78.99/$71.99)
Child 3-9: $23.79/night ($21.99/$20.99)

For the Deluxe Dining Plan, guests receive 3 Table Service Meals (Or Quick Service meals). Table Service meals include which includes an appetizer, entree, dessert, and non-alcoholic beverage. Or, if eating at a buffet, the full buffet. Also included are 2 Snack Credits per day plus one resort refillable mug per person for the length of stay.

*Note that during Peak Season, prices will increase for both the Basic and Deluxe Dining Plans. During Peak Season, the Basic Dining Plan will cost Adults 10+: $53.54/night and $16.02/night for Child ages 3 to 9. For the Deluxe Dining Plan, it will cost Adults 10+: $89.52/night and ages 10+ and $25.79/night Child ages 3 to 9.

One thing to keep in mind when deciding on whether to purchase the dining plans is that gratuities and any extras like alcoholic beverages and appetizers (with the exception of the Deluxe Dining Plan...appetizers are included on that) are not included in the prices listed above and will be added at an additional charge. Be mindful of that when you are budgeting to see if the dining plan is worth it for you, because if you like an adult beverage or two (or three) or often eat appetizers with your meals, the plan may not work for you.

The biggest question that I hear though is, "Is the Dining Plan Worth It?" Is it a good value?

Honestly, I can't tell you if the dining plan is a good value. Really it all depends on each person's individual budget and tastes. It takes a lot of homework to decide if the dining plan is worth getting and for that I suggest looking at the menus on AllEars.net and deciding which restaurants you may be thinking about eating in (to me, the best value is to make sure you're eating dinners when on the dining plan) and looking at the prices and seeing if it meshes up with the cost of the plan.

(Basically, in a nutshell, for the easy way to figure it all out, for an adult, you want to budget about $11 for counter service meal, $3 for snack, and that leaves you with about $37 for dinner, give or take. If you think you'll spend more than that for the majority of your days, then the dining plan may indeed be worth it for you. If not, you may want to look at other options for saving for meals.)

A lot of people do like the convenience of the Dining Plans though. Everything is all paid for (for the most part) and you don't have to worry about what to order. You can just sit back and order what you want. Plus, since everything is then prepaid, so all that you'll really have to pay for during your vacation is for souvenirs.

Some however, don't like the Dining Plans because it serves them too much food. More than they normally eat. This is something else that needs to be considered when looking at the value of the plan. For example, if you don't normally eat desserts, these plans may not be for you.

Whatever you decide to do for your family, getting the Dining Plan or just saving money on something like a Disney Gift Card to pay for your food, or putting money aside in envelopes or whatever, I can't stress enough...you really have to do your homework. But unfortunately, the often asked question of is the Dining Plan worth it, doesn't necessarily have an easy answer to it.

The Frontierland Shootin' Gallery is closed for a 4 month long refurb. It is expected to reopen Oct. 1st.

Epcot

Changes are happening at Innoventions East. The Don't Waste It Exhibit presented by Waste Management has closed. A new attraction called Hero's Habit will be taking it's place, which will be an interactive video game experience. Second, it appears the House of Innovations will be reopening with all new technologies for around the home.
Construction walls have gone up in Japan, as it appears that the Kakigori stand is now going to be made into a permanent building.
New booths for this year's Food and Wine Festival include Hawaii, The Caribbean Islands, and Scandinavia.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Voyage of the Little Mermaid's refurb dates have changed a bit. The refurb has been moved up to start Aug. 13th and last through Sept. 4th.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

It appears the test of DJ Dyno-Mite was apparently successful as he is now back in Dinoland USA from 1 pm - 4:30 pm. He will continue appearances until July 30th.
It's Tough To Be A Bug will be closed for refurb from Aug. 15th - Sept. 30th.

Magic Your Way Ticket prices have increased. Please read this blog post for further details.
Reservations for 2012 packages are now eligible to be booked.
In addition, the Disney's Art of Animation Resort is now accepting bookings. For guests looking to stay in June 2012, Starting June 1st, they may book at stay at the Finding Nemo suites. Starting Sept. 1st, 2012, guests may choose from either Finding Nemo or Cars Suites. Finally, starting Oct. 1st, 2012, guests may choose from Finding Nemo, Cars, or Lion King Suites. No word yet on when the Little Mermaid rooms will be available just yet.
Also, guests who may be looking to stay at the Princess rooms in Port Orleans Riverside, reservations are open starting for March 4th, 2012.
Disney Dining Plan info appears to be coming out. Look for a full blog post with that information here soon.
It appears that the Adventurer's Club and the BET Soundstage will be coming down for demolition soon to make way for Hyperion Wharf.

Rumors

Rumors indicate that the Villas at the Grand Floridian will indeed be the next DVC property announced and it very possibly could be announced at the D23 Expo.

Update: The Second Annual Be Our Guest Podcast Live Show

This past Wednesday was our 12 Hour Live Show where we raised money for Give Kids The World. It was a FABULOUS show! We all had so much fun with it! Not only did we get to chat with our listeners via phone calls and through our chat room, but we were also lucky enough to have some greats in the Disney Community volunteer their time to join us as well. Without the help of these people, I don't think we would have gotten as many contributions as we did.

With all that being said, I am proud to share the total with you of how much we ended up raising! Our original goal was to raise $2000. We got so close to that goal last year, so we thought that was a good goal to have this year. Apparently I like to low ball stuff, because I not only changed the goal amount once, I ended up having to change it TWICE! And we STILL beat our goal! Thanks to the Disney Community's love and support, we raised over $5300 for an amazing charity.

So I just want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our show. Whether it was by donating, calling in, being a guest, or chatting in our chat room with us, you were all the driving force behind being able to have a total like that!

Now all I guess I can say is let's do it again next year....and let's beat our goal yet again!

Walt Disney World Ticket Price Increase 2011

It was announced this afternoon that Disney was increasing ticket prices, yet again. This increase comes a bit earlier than usual, as most of the time in the recent past, Disney has increased ticket prices in August.

To see how things have changed now, a One Day Magic Your Way Ticket (a base ticket into one theme park for one day) has increased from $82 to $85, Annual Pass prices increased from $499 to $519 and a one day Water Park Pass will have increased from $46 to $49.

For those who are unaware, here is an explanation of how the the Walt Disney World Ticket Pricing works:

Base Ticket admits guest to one theme park each day of use. Park choices are: Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
Park Hopper option entitles guest to visit more than one theme park on each day of use. Park choices are any combination of Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom on each day of use.
Water Park Fun & More option entitles guest to a specified number of visits (between 2 and 10) to a choice of entertainment and recreation venues. Choices are Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park, DisneyQuest, Disney’s Oak Trail golf course, ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
No expiration means unused admissions on a ticket have no expiration date. All tickets expire 14 days after first use unless No Expiration is purchased.

Annual Pass entitles guest to unlimited admission for 365 days from the activation date (except activities/events separately priced) to Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as well as complimentary parking.

Here is what the pricing structure will be increased to:

Magic Kingdom

The Tomorrowland Terrace is open again. It is open until June 11th for lunch.
Disney leaked out two new additions to the Fantasyland Expansion. One is the Casey Jr. Roundhouse which will be a circus themed water play area and Scuttle's Scavenger Hunt, an interactive game (I would guess similar to Kim Possible at Epcot) where you will search for human treasures like a dinglehopper and snarfblatt.

Hi guys!

So things have been insanely busy around here! We are officially 2 weeks from leaving for Florida and of course, things always get super hectic before a big trip! With that, I apologize for the lack of posts lately again. (I barely have time to sleep it seems! I'm sure you all understand)

However, I wanted to let you all know about the Be Our Guest Podcast 12 Hour Live Show that we're having next Wed, June 8th from 12 pm EST - 12 am EST. Yes, we are doing it again! This year is our second annual attempt at doing 12 hours nonstop on www.magicalmouseradio.com.

Like last year, we will be raising money for the charity Give Kids The World. Give Kids The World is a resort where children with life-threatening ailments plus their families, are treated to a week-long, cost free, family vacation.

The Ins and Outs of Disney Magical Express

Have you ever used Disney's Magical Express? I have and I LOVE it!

But what is Disney's Magical Express? Guess what? I'm about the explain to you all about how this great service works!

Ok...so you've got a vacation coming up, you're staying on property and you don't want to have the added expense of renting a car...what are you going to do?

Well in 2005, Disney rolled out a fabulous way to allow for guests to get to the resorts without much hassle at all.

Disney's Magical Express is a transportation service that Disney provides out of Orlando International Airport using motor coaches to transfer guests and their luggage to the Walt Disney World Resort...all for FREE!

So how does it work? Well, you'll need to be signed up for it at least 10 days prior to your trip. You can do so by visiting www.disneyworld.com, calling (407) W-DISNEY, or through your travel agent. You will need to know your arriving and departing times and flight numbers. While you can register for this up to 10 days prior, it is recommended that you do so at least 6 weeks in advance. If done well in advance, Disney will send you a packet of information, which has some very valuable items included. More on that in a moment. Packets will only be mailed to guests visiting from the United States or Canada...guests visiting from other countries will receive information once you check in at the Disney's Magical Express Welcome Center.

So, this packet I was talking about? What's in it? Well first is an informational booklet letting you know additional and important advice. Second are these yellow luggage tags. These are important! Make sure to put them on your luggage before you leave your home airport. Why? That will be explained soon. Disney will only mail guests 1 tag per person, but don't fret. If you have more than one piece of luggage call 866-599-0951.

When you pack your bags at home, make sure to pack any essentials you may need during those first 3 hours or so in your carry on bag. This would include medicines, clothes to change into, swim gear, etc.

So, now it's time for your flight. Take off, just like you normally would. Once you land at the airport, that's when the Disney magic takes place. Don't head to baggage claim (unless it is after 10pm, then you will need to claim your luggage first)...instead, head to the Disney's Magical Express Welcome Center. This is located on the B side of the airport on Level 1. Once there, if you have your booklet that was mailed to you in the packet of information, the Disney Cast Member will escort you to the Red Carpet. If you do not have the booklet, then you will nee d to proceed to the counters first.

Once you've gotten to the podium at the Red Carpet, the Cast Member will direct you to a line that corresponds with a bus. That will be the motor coach you take to your resort. Soon, you will be escorted to the correct vehicle. More often than not, your vehicle will include people who are staying at other resorts besides the one you are staying at, so be prepared to make a few stops along the way. From there, relax, let Disney do the driving, and enjoy the video that's played. You'll be on Walt Disney World property typically in around 30-45 minutes.

Now I know you're asking yourself...what about my luggage? We forgot about my luggage? Nope! As long as those yellow tags are on your luggage before you leave home, it will be magically transported to your room. It may take up to 3 hours after you arrives for it to appear at your resort, which is why I suggested making sure to have essential items with you in your carry-on, but it's really cool to be able to go straight to the parks, come home and see your luggage sitting right there in your room when you get back.

Ok...you've had a fabulous trip...but now...it's almost time to leave. So what happens then? Well, Disney has that under control too.

The day before you leave, Disney will hang an envelope on your doorknob. (The Envelope of Sadness! They try to make it more fun by putting Mickey on the front...but alas...it doesn't work. You know it means you're going home.)

In this letter, Disney will inform you of the time you will be picked up from the resort (it's usually 3 hours before your scheduled flight time, though it's 4 hours early if you are an international traveler). Keep in mind, when you board the bus, you must have the vouchers with you that were included in the booklet that Disney mailed to you before your trip. (If you've not received the vouchers in the mail, they will be given to you at the Welcome Center in the airport.)

Disney does also allow for Resort Airline Check in Service, which works similar to the service where they dropped off your luggage, in the fact that once you drop off your luggage at the Check In counter, you won't have to mess with it until you land. Keep in mind that only certain airlines participate and that any baggage fees must be paid in advance, otherwise Disney will not allow you to participate. Also, something to keep in mind is that your luggage MUST be checked in no later than 3 hours prior to your scheduled flight time. If you are even a few minutes late, they will not accept it. (I know this from experience). The resort check in area is not open all day, so make sure to check your luggage before they close, otherwise you'll have to take your luggage with you on the bus back to the airport.

Once your luggage is checked, do what you want to do for the day. You can still use the motor coach if your airline does not participate in the Resort Check In Process or if you are late with checking in, you'll just need to carry your luggage with you to the bus and you'll need to check it at the airport.

When your scheduled time approaches, you'll need to head to the Disney Magical Express loading area out in the front of your hotel. (Symbolized by the Magical Express logo). Hand over the vouchers we talked about earlier to the bus driver, board the bus, and he'll take you back on the sad drive back to the airport.

So, that's Disney's Magical Express in a nutshell. Personally, I love it and use it any time I am staying on Disney property. I like that it is just one added expense that I don't have to have. Plus, for some reason, using Disney's Magical Express really is one of those signs that I'm in Florida and I'm about to start a wonderful Disney vacation.

May The Force Be With You...Or Not

Every year, around May/June, Disney holds Star Wars Weekends, celebrating all that is included in the Star Wars Universe. This event takes place at Disney's Hollywood Studios on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during those consecutive weekends.

Now, I know that I'm odd. I myself, am not a Star Wars fan. Well, I guess I can't say that. Really someone can only technically say that if they've seen Star Wars...and seeing as how I have NOT...saying I'm not a fan isn't really accurate. Basically, I'm pretty much indifferent to the whole Star Wars saga. I could care less about the whole thing.

Yet, for some strange reason, I would like to experience Star Wars Weekends at some point in my life. From everything I've heard about this weekend, it seems like it would be something to behold. Kind of like how a person should experience Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at least once.

So what is it that would draw in someone like me? Someone who is not a big Star Wars fan. (Or, in my particular case...someone who's never seen the movies at all?)

First of all, there's the characters. Now, I'm not talking about those Star Wars particular characters. I have no idea who Queen Ama-what's her name is. I don't know what the purpose of Boba Fett is. And I could care less about Chewbacca. (Aren't you impressed?! I actually know SOME Star Wars stuff!)

The characters I'm talking about are the Disney characters dressed in their Star Wars finest! I want to meet Jedi Mickey, Leia Minnie, Stormtrooper Donald, and Darth Goofy! These are the characters that draw me. They aren't too Star Wars-y that I don't know who they are, but they are Star Wars-y enough to help enhance my experience those particular weekends. It's the perfect mixture!

Another thing that really draws me in and makes me want to go to Star Wars Weekends is the Hyperspace Hoopla! Maybe it's just because I miss saying Hoopla (Hoopla! Adventurer's Club, may you rest in peace!) I really think this show appeal to me because it's quite entertaining. Make sure to check out this video from last year's version...it changes every year.

Now, even though I don't like to get to the parks early (I mean, are the parks really open before noon?!) on Star Wars Weekends, you really should. Not so you can get in line to meet the Star Wars Celebrities who are featured each weekend. No, I think you should get there early so you can see the Storm Trooper Show before park open. I won't post a video that gives it away, but trust me...from what I've seen, it's a hoot! (I'm thinking it's probably funnier if you've actually SEEN Star Wars, but not all is lost on me.)

The last thing that I think I would enjoy, as a non-Star Wars fan, during Star Wars Weekends, is the ability to people watch. Seriously, some people get INTO this! They get all decked out in their Star Wars finest. (The closest I can compare this to is when I go see Harry Potter on opening night at Midnight and see all the people dressed as characters.) So watch as all the Star Wars geeks (and I use that term lovingly) come parading past. It's totally worth it!

I guess I should also throw in experiencing Star Tours. I mean, it is Star Wars Weekends after all. How can you have fun at this event without riding this attraction? Especially now, since it's been completely redone.

So, those are my tips for how to enjoy Star Wars Weekends without being a Star Wars fan! To me, I think you still get a lot out of just being surrounded by the ambiance. It's what makes the whole thing fun.

Of course, if you are absolutely 100% positive that Star Wars Weekends just isn't something you care to experience while down in Florida this time of year, I really suggest avoiding Disney's Hollywood Studios on the weekends. Sure, you don't have to partake in the Star Wars excitement, but the rest of the park will be...which means the park will be a little busier. So, if you don't want to see any of the event, avoid the park on those days.

Magic Kingdom

Demolition walls has shown up around the Fantasyland Skyway building.
It has been confirmed! With the refurbishment of The Enchanted Tiki Room underway, it's been announced officially that a show similar to the original will be returning in August.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Star Tours II is now in soft openings.
On the official opening day of Star Tours II, the attraction will have a delayed opening. Instead of opening at park open, it will open to guests midday.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

The Wild Africa Trek has proven to be quite popular. Disney has increased the number or tours again. Tours will start at 8 am and will run every 45 minutes until the park closes. No word if this is a permanent change or just for the busy month of July.

General WDW News

Wolfgang Puck Express in the Downtown Disney Marketplace will be closed for refurb this week. It will reopen May 21st.

Rumors

The Backlot Tour could go down for a refurb in August.
Tinkerbell and Friends may be staying at Epcot even though the Flower and Garden Festival has ended, at least for the time being.

Let The Memories Begin: My Memories Part 2

A little while back, I started this series here on the blog to share with you all some of my memories of trips that have been quite influential in my life. The ones that have really stuck with me and have become super special. (For those who would like to read my first memory, please read Part 1.)

It was around this time that my love for Disney was starting to grow more rapidly. I had been trying to find a way to get all my best girl friends together for a trip down to WDW, since we'd all gone away to different colleges. It would be the perfect way to celebrate that first year back together. Unfortunately, that trip never did pan out (I'm still waiting to go with my best friend...who has promised me as soon as she gets back from Kuwait next year, that going to WDW and trying to find the Seven Dwarves will be of top priority! I so hope she's right!) The trip I had taken the previous year had shown me how much fun the theme parks were and I wanted so badly to share that with my best friends.

So, it was then that I started the research. I joined a not so little forum in WDWMagic and read as much as I possibly could about the wonder that is Walt Disney World. I couldn't get enough. I absorbed it like a sponge. Everything I read made me just a little more excited and anxious to finally get there, actually having an appreciation of what the parks were made of.

Another big thing happened around this same time. I stopped being afraid. Before when I would go to theme parks, you could hardly get me on anything. I was terrified of roller coasters, but I was getting my courage and was anxious to experience the attractions at WDW that made it famous that I'd been so scared to experience before!

With all that being said, the second trip I would like to share with you all is one that shouldn't have ever happened. You see, in 2003, my dad and I were photographing a wedding at Clearwater Beach and we had a job to do. This was a purely working trip. (In the fun and sun...I mean, who can argue with that?!) We didn't realize it until we got down there, but my dad had somehow made a mistake. He had gotten the dates of our flight back home wrong...we would be staying in Florida an extra day!

Now my dad knew how much I was obsessing over Disney in recent months...and with an extra day that we didn't intend on having, he decided he was going to take me to Walt Disney World.

Now, for those of you who don't know...my dad isn't a very theme park type person. He would go when we were kids because he felt it was the thing to do, to take your kids to Disney World...but I don't know if he ever really enjoyed it. It was also one of the few times in my life when I can remember just doing something with my dad...there was no one but him and I.

I was over the moon excited! The details of this trip are foggy at best again...and I do have some pictures, but most I lost due to a computer that I didn't save the files from. (NOTE!!! ALWAYS save your files somewhere else!!!! If your computer crashes and you don't have a backup...it sucks....your memories are gone!)

I remember we drove up from Tampa and we managed to get a hotel room at the Holiday Inn Maingate. We used to stay there when we were kids. No longer did they have Holiday Hound and the kids club that I remembered so fondly, but the feel of the resort was the same. It felt like an old friend.

The next day, we went to the Magic Kingdom that day and I remember waiting in line for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and being so mad at the Cast Member who was working the line at the merge point for the Fastpass and Standby lines. At the time, I thought she was doing a terrible job, even waiting as some Fastpassers came up the path...they weren't even at her yet! (I still to this day don't remember why we didn't grab Fastpasses. I knew what Fastpass was. I can only assume we already had Fastpasses for another attraction in our hands.) It's because of this encounter that I will never ride Big Thunder without a Fastpass.

I also remember taking my first official ride on Space Mountain! Yes, I'd been on it before, but it had scared the beejesus out of me! This time, I faced my fear and rode. I was brave! And I was so excited that my dad was there with me, getting to experience that...seeing as how he was there the last time I chickened out.

But the thing that I will always carry with me was that I got to have a special day with my dad at a place that I love more than most. That to me, is one of the best things that could have ever happened. So I'm thankful that my dad messed up the flights. Because this trip was meant to be.

As I mentioned, I do have a few photos that I scrapbooked. These, are the memories that stick with me about this trip.

My favorite photo is the one of my dad. We were standing in line for the monorail and I said pretend like you're having a good time. :)

You see, it was this trip that really got the ball rolling for me in a swift manner, because after this trip, my life was about to change...I just didn't know it yet.

Magic Kingdom

Captain Blackbeard will be joining the crew of Pirates of the Caribbean. He will be appearing in the water mist in place of Davy Jones starting May 20th.

Epcot

The new group that took over for The British Invasion is called The English Channel. This new band plays British Rock and Roll. Showtimes are typically 3pm, 4:30pm, 6pm, 7pm and 8pm.
The China Marketplace is closed for refurb in the China Pavilion. It is set to reopened June 2nd.
The 2011 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Tickets are now on sale.

Disney's Hollywood Studios

Voyage of the Little Mermaid will be closed for refurb from Aug. 15th - Sept. 4th.

General WDW News

The Sand Trap Bar and Grill will be closed until May 19th while Ospry Ridge Golf Course is being refurbished.
Car Masters Weekend will take place this weekend, May 13th - 15th at Downtown Disney Westside. It's a weekend filled with all things cars (including Cars 2 characters) and will last from 10:30 am - 6 pm.
The AMC Pleasure Island 24 Movie Theater will reopen as the Downtown Disney 24 Movie Theater featuring a Dine-In option on May 16th.
Blizzard Beach will be down for refurb from Oct. 30th to Dec. 4th.
Typhoon Lagoon will be down for refurb from Dec. 4th - March 18th.
The Military 4 Day Ticket Promotion will continue until Sept. 2012. The deal gives the following pricing for themselves and up to five (5) family members and/or friends

Magic Kingdom

The official dates for Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party have been announced. They are: September 13, 16, 20, 23, 27, 30
October 2, 6, 7, 10, 11, 13, 16, 18, 20, 21, 23, 25, 27, 28, 30, 31
November 1
The official dates have also been announced for Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. They are: November 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, 18, 27, 29, and 30

Epcot

The British Invasion is going to be replaced by a new group starting May 3rd. This new group is said to play all flavors of British music, not just Beatles-centric tunes.

Cirque du Soleil will be dark from May 15th - May 30th.
512 Rooms at Port Orleans Riverside are going to be rethemed to become Royal Rooms. Themed after the Disney Princesses, these rooms will include references to movies like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Princess and the Frog. These rooms are expected to open in the Spring of 2012.

Also, Disney announced this week that over at the Contemporary, this Fall they will be introducing Health and Wellness Suites. These suites will include bamboo flooring, 100% cotton linens, non-allergenic wrapped mattresses, rainwater showers, and tea tree oils. In addition, these rooms will be outfitted with cardio equipment and guests will have access to seasonal and organic fresh foods at the concierge lounge, can partake in yoga sessions and spa treatments in the wellness studio.This area will be located on the 14th floor and there will be 23 rooms in all.

Rumors

Rumors I've head this week about Pleasure Island indicate that the remaining clubs may not be torn down. These clubs may get the chance to reopen, leased under the specification that the club cannot reopen as what it originally was, but could reopen as something similar.

A Room Fit For A Princess

Over the past few years, Disney has been trying to plus the experience for their guests in their resorts. From creating rooms into Family Suites, to including DVC in more resorts, to decorating some rooms in a more whimsical manner. These entertaining rooms are exactly what we are going to focus on today.

A few years back, over at the Caribbean Beach Resort, Disney included into the mix two fantastic new options. First were the Finding Nemo designed rooms with touches of the lovable clownfish all around. In addition a second set of rooms were themed to focus on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Now, it would appear that Disney is going to be including these same type of Specialty Rooms over at Port Orleans Riverside.

For those that missed the announcement 512 rooms are going to be turned into spaces themed around the Disney Princesses. These Royal Rooms will include gold and silver accents, ornate fixtures and unique special effects. Like the Pirate Rooms, these Princess Rooms will have an additional up-charge in order to stay there as well.

These new rooms remind me a lot of Cinderella Castle Suite in the Magic Kingdom and I'm sure that's where they got the inspiration for them from. (Of course, these will be rooms people should actually be able to afford!) They are extremely elegant and regal, exactly what every modern day princess should be entitled to.

Personally, I think it will be a long time before I experience these rooms. The idea of specialty rooms aren't something that I need to make my Disney vacation special. I'm perfectly happy staying at Pop Century, so the extra frills aren't something that I would necessarily feel a need to pay for.

I don't just feel that way about these new Princess Rooms. I actually feel that way about all 3 types of the themed rooms. And maybe that's just because I don't have kids, so I don't have a little princess or pirate in my life clamoring to experience these. And my husband certainly isn't itching to stay here either. (I'm lying...he squealed like a school girl when he found out about the Princess Rooms. ;) ) For me, this isn't something that is going to make me want to upgrade my room choice.

The one thing that I do like about these Specialty Rooms is that they make these rooms seem more like Deluxe rooms...but the best part is that they are only at a fraction of the price. This is especially nice in times like now where money is tight but guests still want the same type of Deluxe experience they may have had previously.
